Car insurance short term for learner

Hi, I'm currently doing my EDT lessons and it was suggested to me that I could add myself to my husbands policy for approx 3 months so that I could legally practice in his car with him as my sponsor.
He called insurance broker he uses and asked about it and they came back saying that they won't insure a learner/provisional driver.

Does anyone know if what I'm looking for is possible?

I have tried searching for similar queries on the boards but couldn't find any so apologies if this has been discussed/answered numerous times before.

    Thanks.

That is very strange that they wont insure a learner driver, I'd wonder if it is actually legal for them to outright refuse to quote?

Temporary insurance in your own name, is not something that is really possible in Ireland. You're going to have to get your husband to talk to the broker/insurer and see why they wont quote/add you to the policy.

Thanks for getting back to me. I did think it was very strange.
I'll have to find out if it's an outright no or just the temporary thing.
It was my EDT instructors suggestion so I assumed he had heard of it being done.

    Thanks again.

If he's with AIG they won't insure a learner, had the same problem myself with my parents car.

It would make sense to just add you as a named driver for the term of the policy, instead of for x months. It is not a work car or anything that your husband is driving by any chance?

    No it's a personal car/policy.
He asked and they said they wouldn't do it for short term so he said ok, can you please check price for year. The answer after checking was that they don't insure learners.
I'm starting to think some wires were crossed maybe! I'm going to ask him to call them directly rather than through broker. If I've to get yearly policy then that's fine, but to flat out refuse any insurance seems bizarre!

You're very likely going to have to get a year long policy and then cancel and subsequently get refunded the balance in the future. Painful but that's the only way I can see.

Why don't you just get added on to your husbands policy and leave it at that? Why are you just doing it for three months? Won't you always need to be on his policy and vice versa, if you get your own car? Most husbands and wives tend to be insured on each others cars, unless there are circumstances that dictate otherwise, such as one of you having a company car that won't let anyone else on the policy. If things change and he decide to take you off the policy later on, his premium will be adjusted accordingly, if he no longer has a learner driver on it.

AIG won't add learner drivers onto an existing policy at all, for no matter how long.

I ended up just getting my own car and insuring it as it was the only option for me because my parents had only renewed their policy with AIG.
