    Hi Guys,
Anybody knows what these are like in Lidl. Seem like a useful device. Are these any good for €30 quid a pop and would anybody have detailed technical specs on it?

    Newbies cant post links:

    http://www.lidl.ie/en/Offers.htm?action=showDetail&id=26564

Looks like a pretty handy thing to have, maybe more €10 handy than €30 though...

When they say you can control devices from anywhere, does that mean even when you're outside your home network?
I wonder how secure it is?

Similar to the belkin Wemo which people are using to control their boiler. Same functionality as a 300 euro climote etc. so yes it's handy for 30 euro

Yeah, the only use i can think of it at the minute is switching on lights to dissuade burglars, but you can get a regular timer in pound shop to do that!

I'm sure you should be able to use it over the internet once you NAT the ports (configure your modem). It definitely would be handy to turn on or off a whole power strip as I would be afraid that it would catch fire if left turned on for too long. Also, it would be nice if it would do reporting of your electricity usage with pretty graphs but I doubt you would get that for 30 quid. I tried 2 different versions of belkin wemo electricity monitor from Maplin and ended up returning them as I was looking for online and mobile phone electricity monitoring.

You can get a similar one for about a tenner cheaper here... might take a punt in my next Amazon order.

That looks quite interesting and even has a timer on it as well.

Remember there are 10 euro vouchers in the papers that you can use if you go over €50 in total.

    So 20% cheaper

The one item missing compared to the wemo range is the motion detector.
With the wemo switches you can add in a separate wemo motion detector which gives much more functionality.

Without motion detectors you can use the WiFi socket as advanced timers. Wemo let's you set it so the socket activates/deactivates at a set time. Setting for sunset\sunrise is very useful as you don't have to keep manually changing times compared to a normal timer.

If you have the wemo switches and add in the motion detector you open up many more options. If motion detected you can activate any of the wemo sockets. (If I walk downstairs at night the sensor will activate 3 lamps on the ground floor in 3 different rooms. It'll switch them off after x minutes).

I keep my immersion on all the time, would this be option to put this plug on it and then control from outside the house?

I think your in the wrong thread. These devices don't claim to be meters.

No. It will only work on appliances that have a plug, which your immersion does not.

This isn't much of a bargain really.

You can also connect your WEMO to an IFTTT account to allow you to write rules to do all sorts of interesting things, I have mine set up to send me a text everytime it is triggered. Also you can set the sockets to switch on at sunset so you dont have to change the timer for different times of the year. Also the lamp lighting when the sensor is triggered is great at night to light hallways etc.....

IFTTT is great, you can take a photo, share it on Facebook, reshare it on Instagram, if it gets any likes upload it to Dropbox and when you get home turn on the lights and laptop and get Google Calendar reminder to take a look at the liked photo

Putting the kettle on when your alarm goes on

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,815 ✭✭✭imitation

If you are willing to risk it, more like. Unshuttered socket sets alarm bells ringing for me.
    http://rjqelectrical.co.uk/2014/10/universal-mains-sockets-warning/

As well buying something that probably meets no electrical standards and is going to be plugged in u attended all day.

They do seem like good value, considering there are DLINK ones which look similar for about €50. Lightwaverf have ones in a 3 pack for about €50 (they might need a wifi box to use outside the home)

If they are like the other ones, once setup, they let you turn a socket on or off from your phone, inside or outside your house. Most have a timer that you can setup. enable or disable etc..

Might be a lazy remote control for your electric blanket..
