For the tasks you mention, I'd say your price range would be overkill. I'd suggest getting a secondhand Core2Duo based machine, and add RAM to 2-4GB. I have several DELL E6400 laptops, they'd easily do what you want, you'd easily find one on ebay for 50-70 euro. Very well built and designed machine IMHO.

Hi, Thanks for that, but would have no idea how to add ram, :o and as I know nothing about the inner workings of them, I was looking at getting at new one, hoping that all that stuff would already be in it and that might last a few years,
    Thank you

sdp, you can go for a Lenovo - they are cheap and best. I am using two lenovos myself. I'm sure you will get a good one in the budget,if not a very fancy looking one. The only thing you have to be careful about is that the laptops these days do not have DVD trays in them (most of them, not all).

For your budget should prob look for an i3 with 4GB ram. Should be more than enough for what you need. I'll link one as an example of what you should be looking at but make sure to shop around find the best deals.

I think older machines are indeed useful. But they are at a dead end.

All my computers are C2D machines, but if you want a machine to last the next 4yrs I think you'll probably outgrow the C2D era. Newer machines give the same performance, with far greater battery life, and can handle things likes video, and media with much less effort.

Those old business laptops like the E6400 do have a much better build quality than consumer laptops though. Great keyboards and such. They were probably 1000+ when new. So thats why.

Be careful when buying new machines many of them are built very poorly. Unless you go for a business class machine.
