Leaving hire car back early

Long/short story - I have a car booked for two weeks and when booking it I selected to drop it back at 0300 because the flight out was at 0630 or something silly. Initially I thought there was little point in getting a hotel room that I would have to vacate at 0400, but I eventually gave in and decided to book anyway.

The car drop off place will be closed at 0300 anyway, but I will have to get a car park ticket so they will know what time I dropped it back. I would much rather drop the car back the afternoon before and be done with it, but I have a niggling worry that they might charge me *more* for dropping it back early.

To top it all off, because this is on the French "side" of Geneva airport, if I actually did manage to drop it off at 0300 I wouldn't be able to get through to the Swiss side because the airport would be closed and moving between the two sides is crossing an official border point . . . meaning I would be trapped in a car park with no way out other than driving my rental car back out into France again. Lesson for today - think very, very, very carefully when flying & hiring in Geneva.

Does anyone know if the car hire company folks are likely to hit me with extra charges or just be happy it's back at 1700 on Saturday and not 0300 on Sunday?

The booking I made directly with Sixt is marked as being non-changeable, so I don't want to ring them and flag it up as then they are more likely to charge me.

I've never dropped a car back a whole day early - I've dropped it off in the morning when it wasn't due back until the evening before with no worries and I can't for the life of me imagine why there'd be any problem with this or why it would give rise to additional fees. If anything you're giving them the opportunity to get the car back on the road a day early and increase their revenue.

Good info re Geneva, by the way - it's something a lot of folk mightn't have considered.

No, its fine, I often do it with Sixt as booking for longer gives you more kilometers that might work out cheaper if you are driving further.

I've seen some car rentals which do have early return penalties.

Check with the company involved as they are really the only be ones who can tell you for sure. It may not be an issue if you advice them: they may be able to adjust the booking to suit what you want to do.
