Gas fire versus oil stove

Hi all, I have a gas fire in the sitting room which we only use occasionally but really dosen't give out much heat but it's fairly convenient. I was wondering if an oil stove would give better heat and would I have to turn the heat on all over the house in order to heat the stove.(sorry if that's a stupid question) Thanks
