Whats the difference between a buffer tank and a normal hot water cyclinder? I thought a buffer tank is just a single coil insulated tank? Would a normal hot water cylinder insulated to death be just as good? (would be going in the shed) Prices seem crazy for buffer tanks.

Buffers are usually made from steel and are under pressure. Copper isn't. Plus, buffers usually start at 500l upwards

buffers are sometimes up to 3 sets of high efficiency coils
    HP
    Solar
    Oil
    backboiler
    etc
they then also may have one or 2 heat exchangers for UFH

so u are not comparing like with like

whats the setup and whats the pipe run from the shed to where the heat is needed

Posted THIS thread about it last year. I'm putting in a 30kw wood boiler in shed 15m from house. Changed my mind now and doing away with my stove so wood boiler will be primary heating (oil just tee'd in as backup). 1 plumber said put in buffer tank, 1 said just use existing cylinder, 1 looked clueless. Just thought if I could make a homemade buffer tank I could save a few quid.

I'd definitely use a buffer. It must also be an open vented system.
