Hi all, I just moved house from south side of Cork city to the north side so I went to AXA and gave them my new address. What a surprise! They told me that I have to pay some extra money because it's north side of the city??? It's still the same city, I am not moving to Dublin so all I can think now is wtf is this s--t? I gave them the money they asked me for, but I am now trying to find out if they have a right to do this.

Insurance companies track crime and claims, premiums vary from place to place and there is definitely a geographic loading. It used to be the case that a huge number of culchees living and working in Dublin used to insure the car at the parents' address down the country - because the premium was less. Probably doesn't happen as much now.

I am going to "move house" again in a week. The only thing I need is a friend who lives on the south side. Thanks for the tip!

If you check "AMA:Ask me anything" on here on Boards.ie, you can find a similar question that was answered by an insurance broker. can highly recommend that thread!

Depending on different factors (location) included, it seems to be legally okay for the insurance company to ask more money.
This makes kinda sense considering the stolen/damaged cars in certain areas I'm afraid

Different suburbs in the same city have different rates of car crime. This is why insurance costs more in some suburbs than others.

Be careful declaring a wrong address for your insurance, if you get in an accident and it's found out you (perfectly rightly) could be left in the lurch. Insurance companies tend to be quite good at investigating accidents for any loophole to get out of paying they can find.

I wouldn't worry about that, because:

    1. the car is worth only few hundred yoyos

    2. I am driving without accidents since I got the driving licence (which is from 04/2002) so it is very, very unlikely that I will cause an accident... If somebody crashes into me, I will just walk away from that pile of cr-p :D

Of all the weird and wonderful excuses insurers have to justify higher premiums or refuse you business, you've taken exception to being asked for more money to insure a car that is parked overnight in an area with higher car crime???

If you do this you could get into trouble if you ever have to claim.

Everybody thinks they're very unlikely to cause an accident, until one happens to them. The main issue you'd be facing isn't the worth of your car. Its your health costs, if you're injured. Or it's the costs to the other car, if you're at fault.

There could also be legal consequences if the insurance company decides to pursue you for knowingly lying to them.

I don't think its worth the risk, personally. The insurance loading for moving suburbs can't be much, I doubt it's over 50eur?
