Does the van have a towbar. If so, do the brake lights work on a trailer plugged into it?

It has a tow bar but I have never used it.its got a wired socket on towbar. I presume thats wired from the two rear lights not working

It'd be wired into a CANBUS relay box yoke.

Look for corrosion in the light clusters too.

Check all the connector plugs as well. The centre bulb is connected to the passenger side cluster

It's a bad earth, I fixed this on my uncles van when nearly new.(same year) The earth wire is attached to a painted surface, scrape off some paint and attach with a nut and bolt, sorted!

Check to see if the points where the brake bulb makes contact in the holder are corroded. If they are try cleaning them up a bit if at all possible use a small file or sand paper etc but be careful with it as the whole assembly is pretty flimsy.

It's a very common issue with partners/berlingos the rear light assembly has a poor water/weather seal and moisture invariably finds its way in.
