    Only once declaration period expires...
F.e. if you declared off the road for April, May, June, then you can tax it online from 1st July.

If your declaration is still in place, and you want to tax it, you can not do it online.

I declared it off the road for a year which hasn't expired yet and I want to tax it from the 1st July.

Just call into the motor tax office and you can tax it then

You need to come up to motortax office on 1st July or alternatively send documentation through regular post. No other way I'm affraid.

Actually, the period of non use doesn't statrt until the 1st of July, same as when the tax renewal.

I declared it off the road earlier this month but I've changed my mind and want to tax it and keep using it, do I still need to go to the tax office?

My OH works in the motor tax office and she says yes you can. Even before the expiration. The taxing overrides the declaration. In your case the declaration hasn't even started, but she says it will still work. You need to click on the retrieve pin option however and you will be emailed one and then you're off.

So you say that someone who is in the middle of "off the road declaration" can tax vehicle online anytime?
Unless it changed recently, it's not true.
I tried last year, and you couldn't do it. I had to go to motortax office myself.

I'm merely repeating what herself says and she works in the place.
I find it a little weird myself cos I thought there was a minimum period of 3 months for off the road periods. So whats the point if you can just decide after 3 weeks 'ah sod it'. But then again they couldn't keep your car off the road, your circumstances could just have changed.
But anyway, yes, thats what she said. I say give it a try, the worst that could happen is that the system won't let you and you have to go to the motor tax office after all. No worse off than before.

It would be absolutely mad system if you couldn't tax your vehicle when declared off the road if circumstances change. Luckily this was never the case since system was introduced.

As I said I tried it last year, and it didn't work. System said that vehicles is declared off the road, and it can not be taxed online.

However - I checked now, as I have one vehicle declared off the road until next year.
And indeed it works online now.
So advice I've given to OP above is incorrect.

You can tax a vehicle online at any time.

This raises another concern though - what's stopping anyone now to have a script on their phone which would automatically fill all the forms on motortax website to tax a vehicle. One button on the phone clicked and vehicle taxed.
Then anyone can drive untaxed vehicle, and when approaching road check, they can just press the button on the phone, and vehicle will be taxed by at the time of the road check.

Yeah, 60 quid - pretty much nothing comparing to tax of 1800 of something. Well worth the risk.

I'd say scripting such a thing would be beyond most people I know.

I managed to do it last year. In fact I got to point out a design flaw in their system to them while doing it...

Well it's enough if one person makes such script and makes it public or available for few quid on android market or something.

You've seen how lazy the average Irish driver is at driving their cars. Imagine them trying to go to the effort of scripting or even gettign the app and having it all set up and ready to go with their details pre-entered. xD

Ye but they're not so lazy when it comes to saving a few quid or better getting one over 'the man'. So I suppose valid point.

Edit: But you could however use renewal date(time) and it would be an easy spot if the car was taxed 30 seconds before the road check.

    Thanks for the help :)

I taxed it online today with the existing pin from my renewal email.

It would, but what could they do with such information.
If at the moment of road check car was already taxed, I can't really see how a person could be penalised for driving car which was declared off the road.
