contract with builder

I'm signing a contract with builder this week, starting construction next week hopefully. My parents just mentioned that 'back in their day' you signed the contract with the builder with a solicitor. Anyone know if this is normal these days?

Who is the 'contract administrator'? They should comment on the contract particulars and witness it? This is typically the person preparing the construction drawings & spec or acting as the certifier

Thats my engineer. He's going to be my certifier. You reckon as long as he is involved no need for a solicitor so? I suppose back in the 80s there was no certifier
