Berkeley tragedy coverage - female-centric?

The deaths of 6 Irish students in Berkeley is, of course, a terrible tragedy, and not one that should be used for point scoring. However, has anyone noticed an emphasis on female lives lost, at the the expense the male lives lost?

Six people were killed - three male, three female. All were equally terrible.

However, this is the email I received in my inbox this morning.

I know this is just one (not particularly good) website, but to show pictures of all three young women killed, and not a single young man, appears to me to be another example of how the media values the lives of men so much less than the lives of women.

Yes, the article itself is probably just clickbait, and maybe beautiful young woman attract more attention than men would.

But, imagine if the same tragedy had happened, but with three white people and three people of colour. What if a website's banner image decided to focus entirely on the white people, and completely fail to include a photograph of any of the other people?

Wouldn't it be seen as inappropriate?

Again, this whole situation is the tragedy, and maybe it's too fresh to ask this question.

And I've seen photographs of just two of the guys somewhere.

    Clutching at straws.

A tragic event like this being used to show perceived sexism? Have a bit of respect OP.

I despair at the loss of male life being made out as being less of an evil as the loss of female life but I'm not seeing anything substantial here at all to evince that that is the case in the reporting of this tragic accident.

Irish Central is a crap site anyway. The spammy popups are beyond my tolerance and send me away until next time I accidentally find myself there.

It never ceases to amaze me how people will see conspiracies or perceive slights in just about everything these days. To paraphrase the film On The Waterfront:

    - What are you getting offended about?
    - Whaddya got?

Hate to be a pedant, but that line's from The Wild One, not On the Waterfront.

There are Irish families mourning a terrible loss and trying to pull some sort of anti male agenda from it… well it beggars belief. Closed.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.
