Quick question. Are you allowed to put a bicycle in the boot of a car if you put the back seats down and keep the boot closed?

Why would you not be allowed ?

    "Allowed" in what way?

I have a particularly large boot and always put the back seats down allowing me to put the bike in without taking wheels off (unless the pesky kids are in the car, in which case I need to take the front wheel off)

Thought it might be illegal to have a bike that wasn't properly secured in the back seat.

I think the OP is thinking about insurance. In the event of a head-on collision, your bike will become a missile and could fly thru the windscreen and possibly take you along with it. Of course, that goes for anything else you have in the boot when the seats are folded down.

Never seen any reference to this in my insurance policy contract.

also in relation to insurance, don't forget that items not placed in the boot or glove compartment (i.e. where they're not visible) may not be covered by your insurance policy in case of theft.

Ah my car a bike are a heap of sh!te anyways :pac: . I wouldn't be leaving it parked up with it in the boot as I am driving and then cycling to work from were I park.

neither have I, Im just guessing that's what the OP is asking/thinking.

Be worth thinking about having some way of quickly putting a restraint on it should it go flying in an accident.
I was in an incident before where a spanner that was in the back clipped me in the ear as we came to an abrupt stop

Same goes for dogs, most people don't use a harness.

I took the back seats out my car so that I can bungee the bikes onto the seat brackets - front wheel removed and bike stored upright. The car is only for bike stuff, don't use it for anything else.

The law says nothing about it but your insurance, probably not. Just make sure when you are putting it in and out, put it in derailleur side up, or you could damage the derailleur, or the hanger, which can be difficult to repair, or depending on your bike, costly to replace.

Nice boot. Do you use a chain grip to stop the chain messing up your frame/boot??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,370 ✭✭✭07Lapierre

Yes a chain grip with the chain on the big ring.. It's so tight in there I don't need to restrain the bike. There's just enough room for the wheels and track pump!

off topic but boot related - a bit of magic trickery here Paul Daniels would be proud of..
Unfortunately I can't do the embeddery.

You can't beat the boot of an Octavia for space. I had one the same colour as the photos and it became a challenge to see what wouldn't fit in.

I remember seeing the aftermath of a crash where a guy had quite a few trays of eggs in the back up until the moment of impact. Not a pretty sight.

You'll find that many cars have tie-down eyes hidden away under the boot carpet. Failing that, a bungee cord to the isofix child seat loops would work.

Bromptons seem to fit in all boots without moving seats. Ford Fiestas are pretty
small cars by modern standards, I think? I got it into the boot of one of them.

Not much use if you're heading to a race, but you can't have everything.

no worries. try just take the front wheel off first and try that. the back can be a little awkward to get back on, so if you can get away without taking it off. its not the most ideal way to transport your bike but if it works. i also put a tarp under the bike(s) just to try keep the car from getting messed up. you may also have to take your saddle off if its quick release, to squeeze in the frame.

+1 on this. Currently throw my bike wheels 'n' all into the back of my Octavia, even with one of the back seats still in use. Needing to replace it shortly and I'm hard pressed to consider anything else - my wife wants a Qashqai+2, I'm not convinced my bike would fit in so easily.

You'd be hard pushed to fit a paper envelope in the boot of a Qashqai +2 when all the seats are up.
