Car Seat for Airplane

Think of booking our first holiday with the wee lad. He is 11 months old but will be 17 months old when we're hoping to go.
Its Aerlingus from Dublin to Orlando. He wouldn't be one for sitting on our laps for that amount of time. So thinking of just buying a seat for him.
Does anyone know what car seats are approved for airlines flights?Do they have to be FAA approved or just the european equivalent?
Its a bit of a grey area.

Must be a 5 point harness, FF seat and either Europe (CE) or American (FAA) approved, and also state "certified for use onboard aircraft". Would you maybe buy an extra seat for comfort and have him on your lap for take-off & landing?

We flew to New York with our daughter when she was 17 months old. She also wouldn't be one for sitting on our laps for seven hours but at the same time she wouldnt be one for sitting in a seat on her own either so buying a seat would be a waste of time and money, in our case anyway!

When you're booking your seats with Aer lingus they offer you the bassinet seats which are behind the toilets, they're much roomier, plenty of space for little one to play on the floor etc we found getting up and having a walk etc around the plane passed the time much quicker, she didn't spend much of the flight seated! We did the same flight again when she was 20 months and found the bassinet seat great again. Aer lingus were extremely accommodating, they try to put parents in seats with empty seats beside them if they're available so you may find you get a bit of extra space without paying for it anyway!

I wouldn't bother. As other poster said if you're flying Aer Lingus our experience has been that they'll sit you with an extra seat and/or with bassinet seats. They're extremely helpful during check in with all those kinds of things.
