Ive applied for my full test, just waiting on a date. Ive got a car that I plan to use but im hoping to save as much as possible on insurance.

Currently Im insured on my girlfriends car while still on my learner permit but will like to get my own car on the road asap to get used to driving it and possibly use that for the test. If I were to wait until I have my full license before going out on my own with insurance, would I see much of a saving compared to getting insured on it while still on the permit.

I dont see much of a saving when getting online quotes

    Thanks

You might get a small decrease but nothing major, only real discount you can get is by building up your no claims bonus.

    Yep.

One of the biggest factors that affects your premium is how many years you are driving and how many years of accident free, claim free & points free driving, you have under your belt. None of that is going to change, just because you have passed your test.

Passing the test is still an accomplishment though. So you will see a slight reduction in the premium, when you get your full license, but it won't be anything major.

    Zero difference in most cases.

    Thanks guys.

I think ill hold off until Ive got the full license and get my own insurance then. Wont be driving on my own until then anyway. No point paying for insurance when its sitting in the drive

I think most of you are wrong about this.

I got insured on my learner permit for €1,700. I passed the driving test and got my full licence. The insurance company refunded me €400 after I passed the test.

You got a big discount, but I would agree there should be a significant difference.

OP, I would wait until you have your license. If you take out the insurance now, there is no guarantee at all that they will refund money when you pass. At least if you buy your insurance after you have your full you wont have to worry about this.

There'll be a few bob off for full license vs. learner permit alright, but you don't notice it making much of a difference unless you have a couple of years NCD.

Friend passed a week ago and was only refunded 90 euro off his policy, I've heard similar from others who passed recently, it's not as big a discount as it used to be.
