Criteria for British applicants of Irish citizenship through naturalisation

    Hi,

I'm British with Irish ancestry, but my grand father was born in the UK to Irish parents. As my father and I were neither put on the Irish Foreign Births Register and my father didn't obtain Irish citizenship prior to my birth, I've no claim to citizenship through decent. In order to apply for Irish citizenship, I've to follow through the criteria for application through naturalisation. I learned from the internet (I grant you it's not always a reliable source) that the British have an easier criteria to fulfill than other EU nationals. This is due to the pre-existing ties between the two countries before the EU membership. However, I can't seem to find information on the Citizens Information website or the Irish Naturalisation and Immigration Service pages that differentiates British subjects from other EU nationals in this regard. Has any British person here been through the naturalisation process? Would anybody know where there is information online on what criteria the immigration service process use to establish if a British person specifically is entitled to citizenship this way?

    Many thanks in advance.

Criteria is the same for all EU citizens. 5 years residency required before naturalisation. The only concession for british subjects/citizens is that all time spent in the state is reckonable, including time spent studying.

Thanks a lot, I heard that alright but didn't see it written. Could I ask you, would you know, where this information came from?

Would you or anybody know if this flexibility also extends to work that's been done whilst living in Ireland. I ask because I lived outside of Ireland for a few years until a year ago and so my work record would have to take into account my stay in the years before I left Ireland.

    Thank you.

    from here http://www.insideireland.com/sample08.htm

depending on how long you have been out of ireland your time spent here might not count. You need to have been here for 5 out of the last 8 years.

the 5 years out of 8 rule is mentioned on the inis page here http://www.inis.gov.ie/en/INIS/Pages/Frequently%20asked%20Questions%20about%20Irish%20Citizenship%20and%20Naturalisation#Q7

More precisely, you need to have been here for the year immediately prior to application, plus periods totalling at least four years out of the eight before that.
