Lock nut ringing.

Drove over a garden rake and got puncture. I was changing my tyre to one of them dummy tires on a 2002 merc and while changing it, the jack slipped and car dropped onto the tyre. I jacked back up, put nuts in place and when went to drive, the wheel locked. I tried to drive it and the wheel unlocked but there was a grinding noise from the around wheel so stopped.

What I noticed is that I was supposed to put smaller nuts on the dummy wheel which was provided with the wheel. I proceeded to install new bolts but the lock nut won't come off the wheel with the larger but :( it just keeps turning. So basicly, does anyone know what I can do?

So the lock nut is turning but not coming off? Try getting a large flat head screw driver and have someone lever the nut as you turn it. It must be badly cross threaded for it to have worn the threads on the nut. Just hope the threads on the stud aren't damaged too (although studs are replaceable)

With the greatest of respect, I would call a good mechanic who knows exactly what they are looking at.

There could be all sorts of unseen damage done after a car falls off a jack.

I'm glad you were not working underneath the car when it came down. People die that way every year.

It sounds like the suspension took a turn. Take it to a garage (or have them come out if car cannot be moved) and let them check the suspension out and get the wheel off for you.

I never use a scissors jack for this very reason. I carry a trolley jack in the boot at all times. I once forgot it in my 5 series I had a flat so jacked it up and it collapsed in on itself, luckily I had a wheel underneath as my feet were under the car.

    Hi ,
Was it nuts or studs you put on incorrectly ? , if it was studs and they were too long you may have damage done to the internals of the hub check it out before you go any further.

Mercs come with shorter bolts for the space saver wheel.

Looks like OP used the normal ones (Which were too long) and that was the grinding noise?

Steel wheels take a very short bolt. The long bolt will ruin the thread if used with a steel wheel

OP will need a new hub as retreading the hub is rarely a success
