There is an opening in Clonmel for a new medical centre for Doctors specialising in the GPs Providing Services For Under 6s.

My own view is that this would be an ideal opportunity for a couple specialising in Paediatrics to return to Ireland to set up their own practice.

First of all they would have to consider the hostility they would get from the established Medical Profession, which in time will dissipate. In the meantime they can point to the Hippocratic Oath that they have taken when entering into their profession.

Interesting to note that to date that South Tipperary has the lowest percentage of GP's registered for this scheme.

I am quite surprised that the local politicians have not come together to issue a call to the GP´s to sign up to this scheme!

I find that almost unbelievable that more people are not protesting in favour of more GP's to registering inr favourf the under 6 free GP scheme!

Hard to understand the silence on this thread with South Tipperary having the lowest numbers of GP's to sign up to the scheme!

It's a disgrace isn't it? I think parents need to lobby the local TDs over this though I read somewhere that where a town is left with no free under 6s service that the children will just get a GP visit card instead.

Of course none of this solves the problem of the lack of GPs in the area either.

Wasn't there a thread here a while back asking for recommendations for a GP and no one could recommend any in Clonmel....can't say I'm surprised they didn't sign up, seem like a group who are little more than money grabbers, I imagine that's what this boils down too...less money for under 6s than they could get for regular patients. We badly need new GPs in this town by the looks of things

I see that South Tipperary Medical Doctors, have Dr. David Janes who is practising in Fourmilewater in County Waterford as their spokesperson.

This is the one I think.

Every one could ring their gp and ask them to sign up. The South tipp gp are having a meeting next week to get better condition from the minister.

Over 90% of GP's in Donegal are happy with the conditions.

Many GP's have over extended themselves in the property bubble. Building large Medical Centres and trying to corral their patients into waiting rooms like cattle markets, this is universal throughout the country.

Better to find a smaller practice where you get closer personal attention1

It might be worth mentioning that Fourmilewater is in County Waterford, why do not the Medical Doctors in South Tipperary front up and get a spokesman in South Tipperary.

Patients in the Fourmilewater area could be well advised to find a GP in West Waterford!. Only a short drive from Dungarvan, Cappoquin and Lismore!

Do you actually know where Fourmilewater is?

I would only love to drive 25km+ to see doctor, when to get to Clonmel would be 15km. Or see my local one in Fourmilewater.
    Enough said on the matter.

Good to get an unknown doctor out in the sticks with a captive "audience". Saves bad publicity for Clonmel practices.

I've no strong opinion either way, however....
There's a gp iver hanrahan on Facebook who appears quite happy to discuss the matter. Why not engage him with your concerns.

Tbf, we live in a free country. The under 6 contract is like any other. Either party isn't obliged to sign up. The gps get about 120 per child. Talk here about them being forced to sign up is crazy. If the state offered €5 per child ought the gps still be forced/obliged to sign. Obviously some want the extra custom some don't .

He is hardly unknown or in the sticks, maybe he is just willing to stand up and put his neck on the block where the town doctors are not...I have quite a few friends who attend his practice....which is only about 10 miles away !!!! Anyway, attacking him doesn't do anything to resolve the issue, who the spokesman is hardly matters.....

What can TDs do about it? The GPS are offering a private service. If they don't want to enter into a contract they can't be forced.
Makes me laugh how people think that their TD is responsible for fixing everything that upsets them.

Yes, I agree that lobbying TDs is usually pointless and a waste of their and your resources and time.

My problem with this is that it looks like Tipperary is going to have an extremely low take up rate for this service so the public's access to these services are dependant on where you live which can't be right. And yes, while you can't force private GPs into a contract I think the decision to grant all children under 6 a GP visit card will remedy the problem.

For the record I don't agree with this initiative at all. Free healthcare should be based on ability to pay rather than age or illness or some other discriminatory factor.

Health Minister refuses to meet South Tipp GPs.

Just five doctors across the south of the county have signed contracts for the programme which is due to start at the beginning of July.

An open letter signed by 39 GPs in the area was sent to Leo Varadkar seeking a meeting to discuss their concerns at the impact the free scheme will have however, that request has been denied.

South Tipperary GPs have said they are extremely disappointed that the Minister for Health has refused to meet with them to discuss their patient safety concerns in relation to the under-6s scheme.

In an open letter to the Minister last week, the GPs expressed their concern that the increased demand, reduced consultation time and waiting list which would arise as a result of the scheme.

They called on Minister Varadkar to meet with them to discuss the situation and to engage with them to ensure that the safety of their patients was given priority.

However, in a letter received by the South Tipperary GPs this weekend, Minister Varadkar refused the request.

Of the 51 General Practitioners in South Tipperary just 7 have signed contracts for the free GP care for Under 6s scheme - made up of 5 different doctors with some operating two offices.

The doctors opposed to the plans have thanked local political representatives for their support and say they will now refocus their efforts on ensuring that their patients are aware of the risks involved in delivering this flawed contract but they will not be signing up to it.
    !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

When your candidate in the next General Election comes a calling looking for your vote, remember to ask what their position was on the introduction of this scheme.

Not often we see politicians being the lapdogs of such a powerful lobby group.

Fair play to Varadkar for standing his ground!

JUNIOR HEALTH MINISTER Kathleen Lynch has said there has been a “phenomenal” increase in the number of parents signing up for free GP care for under 6s.

Lynch told Newstalk Breakfast ten parents are registering for the service every minute, noting: “The system couldn’t bear the volumes that were coming in.”

The Cork North Central TD said the number of GPs signing up has “skyrocketed as well”.

Using her home county as an example, she noted that Cork initially had “a very low uptake” rate, but this has now reached up to 70%.

Lynch said she expects over 90% of GPs to sign up.

Public registration for free GP care opened last Monday. About 10,000 parents signed up in the first 24 hours, with Health Minister Leo Varadkar tweeting over the weekend that this figure had hit 40,000.

The Department of Health reached an agreement with the Irish Medical Organisation (IMO), which represents around half of Ireland’s GPs, on the scheme.

However, the National Organisation of General Practitioners (NAGP) has remained strongly opposed to the initiative – claiming it will significantly increase the workloads of already stretched general practitioners.

“The process is on the road, it’s on the way. There’s no turning back,” Lynch said.

HEALTH MINISTER LEO Varadkar had an intense exchange with a number of GPs on Twitter yesterday after they hit out at him over the under-sixes service.

The minister had triumphantly tweeted that 40,000 children were already registered for free GP care and almost three quarters of doctors had signed up.

It didn’t go down well with GPs who are opposed to the scheme but Varadkar was ready to give as good as he got:

It is a matter of public record who the spokesperson is! I am a private individual and I am not the issue. Ignore the issues, rather typical get at the person, what has my name got do to with it. This is why so many people do not speak out about issues that affect their lives!

By the way what criticism did I make?

you have some issue with the doctors. at least the doctor you named does not hide behind a screen name. if you have anything to say to them be a man and put your name to it. you have a whole thread going here on it and how Varadkar stood his ground

you are not speaking about issues that affect live either. anonymous internet talk does not count for much

"When your candidate in the next General Election comes a calling looking for your vote, remember to ask what their position was on the introduction of this scheme."

at least they will identify themselves. write to a paper and put your name to it

"I am quite surprised that the local politicians have not come together to issue a call to the GP´s to sign up to this scheme! " why don't you become a politician and do it. always telling others what to do from behind the anonymous keyboard

"Hard to understand the silence on this thread with South Tipperary having the lowest numbers of GP's to sign up to the scheme" speak some where you will be heard and identify yourself

"By the way what criticism did I make?" try "Good to get an unknown doctor out in the sticks with a captive "audience". Saves bad publicity for Clonmel practices. " he is not as unknown as you

"what has my name got do to with it." you named and criticised the doctor.. unknown/out in sticks

This a discussion forum. Posters come here to express their opinions and seek the opinions of others and discuss the issue back and forth. This GPS name and location is as matter of public record. The poster is entitled to be hold an unfavourable opinion of this GP and to express that opinion here. Do you not understand that?

You csn express an opinion on the subject under discussion.
You can't attack a poster for having an opinion you don't approve of,accuse him of cowardice and demand he reveal his identity.
But I can see you don't really "get" the notion of discussion forums so I'll leave it at that.

he was not having a opinion he was answering his own posts and adding to the rant. saying i do not get forums is a cop out as you know you are losing the argument. it is easy to knock doctors when you do not have to identify yourself. having an opinion is one thing , ranting on and on is another

I understand that GP's in South Tipperary are now participating fully in the under six scheme. Only came to my attention today.
