Getting Back Behind The Wheel - Learning All Over Again

    Hi all,

Just thought I'd post here for some advice/encouragement.

I learned how to drive a number of years back and all was going well for almost a year on a provisional licence. I was progressing nicely and was in the process of applying for my full test. However, one afternoon I had an accident which caused my car to become a write off. I know my biggest mistake was not just getting back behind the wheel straight away, but as I was car-less I began to take the bus to work/college, hopped in with family/friends when we were going to events etc. To this day (almost 8 years later) I still haven't drove again.

However, now that my lack of driving is starting to lessen my career opportunities and impact on my personal life, I know that I have to bite the bullet and get going again. As I let my licence etc expire, I know I must pass the theory test again and subsequently complete the essential driver training consisting of 12 one-hour lessons. That's something I'm pleased about as I'm essentially learning all over again which I need to do.

I suppose I'm just looking for any advice/encouragement from people who have been in the same/similar situation to myself? I get nervous on the odd occasion even when I'm a passenger now since my accident. In an ideal world I'll get back behind the wheel and it'll be like I've never stopped, but I'm under no illusions that it may be a tough road back (and tough for my instructor too! :pac:).

I have a few other bits and pieces ongoing at the minute, but my plan is to get the theory test sorted out by next month when I can start preparing, to get the ball rolling.

    Any comments/advice is appreciated. :)

I learned to drive on our family farm. One of my practice runs was delivering meal to cattle and driving an old van through the fields.

One afternoon when I was 17 I made a mistake and ending up putting the van in the drain. No damage done to myself or the van but it put me off driving.
Like yourself, I didn't need it for college, and initially for work. Eventually I went back to it to try and get my full licence.

It was stressful for me, and to a certain extent I didn’t trust myself. It played on my nerves during the test and it was a while before I eventually passed.
I’m over it now but it did take a while. Hopefully you’ll manage it better than I did. All I can say is to stick with it.
