Flat Battery in Renault Fluence

    I brought my son to a tennis match on Saturday afternoon. I watched the match from the car while reading the paper and listening to the radio - Ireland/Scotland match. Nothing was turned on except the radio. Everything seemed fine but when I went to leave, the car wouldn't start. It started immediately with jump leads and I drove it around for 15 minutes. It started fine for the rest of the day but would not start on Sunday morning. Again started fine with JLs and started fine all day. However, again this morning it would not start - started fine with JLs again.

    My question is: is the battery finished or can it be brought back? I will be driving to Dublin (from Cork) tomorrow - would this journey be enough to bring the battery back to life? Any help and advice appreciated.

    I should add: the car is a 1.5L diesel and is 2011 with 97K KM.

    How old is the car? Is the original battery still in it? You should check the charging voltage (meter across the terminals set to the 20V range, engine running, you're looking for ~14.5V) before writing off the battery.

    Thanks for the quick reply JG - you even got in before my Ninja Edit! The battery is the original and seemed perfect before Saturday. I will check the voltage at lunchtime and report back.

    I would expect slightly better innings from a 2011 OE battery, but it could be time for a new one.

    My 2011 megane just got a new battery the old one was on the way out (granted it had been sitting up I. The dealers for a few months before I bought it) seems Renault batteries of that era aren't the best but then the clocks stay lit up when you sit in it so a bit of a draw but shouldn't run down over a short period of time.

    Op just do yourself a favour and get a new battery with at least the same cca (cold start capacity) and current (ah) as people have this tendency to buy a new battery that's 10amp less than the old one to save a few bob and then wounder why its fcuked after a year.

    This, oh a thousand times this. OP, if it transpires that you are getting a new battery, get a Yuasa Silver. They're well over OE spec and guaranteed for five years.

    Thanks for the reply. I presume my Fluence would take the same battery as your Megane. Is there a battery you would recommend or where should I go?

    Yuasa are very good as recommended above bosch s3 or s5 are good either they are both main brand with warranties. Just read the sh and cca value of the battery that in it and stick to them or get slightly bigger values make sure the battery you are buying is the same size and the poles are in the right position but that's not too difficult.

    Funnily enough the car started (just about!) when I tried it at lunchtime - presumably due to the warm weather. There was a steady 14.7V across the poles of the battery. Would a long journey (Cork-Dublin return on the same day) make any difference to the battery or is it going to die shortly anyway? If it's definitely on the way out I might as well replace it now and save any more hassle.

    In my experience, and I've changed many a battery at this stage, once they start messing like that they're going to let you down before the end of the Summer. :pac:
