    The light lights sporadically for the last week, and then disappears
    Brake lights fail to come on when light on panel is on but brakes seem fins.

    Sometimes it clears when I pump the pedal while stationery checked some of the obvious things put what is the most likely cause and cost to fix.

    Exact same problem as yourself. Had it serviced & checked and no fault codes stored or anything. Having a look around sounds like a lot of people associate it with brake pedal being connected alright. Someone once mentioned it could be bad fuel but hopefully someone can offer a solution!

    New brake light switch needed I'd say .
    You didn't say what year your Golf is - switch most likely above brake pedal;twist to remove and twist new one into position ;
    Have a look at this to avoid damaging new switch

    brake light switch is e 16/20,for a fabia anyway,2 minute fix,my buddy whos an auto electrician did it as a favour,but e 20/25 would seem fair,pull back foam trim behind brake pedal,and its looking at you,but be warned,very easy to break it,best left to an auto electrician/mechanic

    I think the last Golf one I fitted cost about €15 from the dealer - but not sure .
    Have a good read through the link I gave you above - could save damaging the new one
