Remote Assistance: Win7 to XP

I regularly get called on to help my Dad with his old XP desktop

I decided today to try out remote assistance and all works well when we are connecting locally through his router

However, I am unable to connect to him from my home and I'm wondering if there is some configuration needed on the router to get it to work. He is using a Vodafone branded Xyzel(?) router. At my end I've an Archer C7 plugged into a UPC box

This is the only link I can find but I dont know anything about opening ports..

    http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-networking/error-remote-assistance-cant-make-the-connection/75cdb32c-f34b-45ae-bde0-ca50e21490e0

Is there any other software that would be easier to configure?

    Thanks

Forget remote assistance. Team viewer. It's free for personal use. That's should work no problem.

XP is a minefield for novice users now anyways, retire that machine.

Believe me when I say I have dropped plenty of hints, but my Dad is now in his 80's..

Thanks, Team Viewer worked a treat. A bit painful trying to talk my Dad through downloading and installing it, but got there..

Glad you got sorted. You'd have had to get your dad to open ports on his router and redirect traffic on port 3389 to his PC. I'd say TeamViewer was a bit easier to get to work!
