I'm 16 and I am doing silage for a local contractor.. My dad got me the job and I haven't discussed pay yet with the contractor what should I be roughly asking for an hour?

At 16 you might not have a lot of experience driving at silage so l wouldn't go demanding so much an hour.
You could ask him what the going rate is a day and maybe ask for a raise when you have done a few weeks work.
If you know any lads you could ask what they are getting.
Don't be taken advantage of either

Don't be afraid to ask questions if your unsure about anything. The boss would much prefer a young lad asking questions than penance.

Pull out the geese gun when you get a chance. Keep your cab clean. Take your time for the first few weeks and you'll be as good as anyone.

And most important, if in doubt hit the diff.

I worked full time for a young farmer (who shall remain nameless but passed away a couple of months back and is known here) for 18.18 a day, I will till the day I pass never know how the daily rate was set at that.

Re: Contract work, yea the age is a killer on you for that, you probably don't have big expenses at this point in your life so you could chalk this season up to experience and take whatever few bob he is giving you and smile (grin and bear it as they say), if you are handy and live somewhat close then the contractor will maybe be thinking along the lines of how convenient you are in the coming years so you could do well out of it all.

I heard of a young guy near me getting €10 an hour with a contractor / farmer.

Lads, by the sound of your replies ye can all come and work for me!!!
Anyone ,young or old, should expect a days pay for a days work.

Always always always get paid by the hour drawing silage. Some contractors try it on with a youngster with a daily rate.Grand at 100 per day when you start at 8am and finish at 8pm ie 9 euro an hour.Different crack when its off at 7am and finish at 1am for the same money.
Know there is no fortune in hire work but expecting someone to work for minimum wage or less and giving them maybe 100k of machinery to fly around in all day and night hardly makes sense.

Drew silage for a good few years and no contractor around here would even entertain a 16 yr. old in this day and age.
Even so if you same doing the same work as someone else then why not the same pay.

I'm not a contractor but I would think too many 16 yos have turned silage trailers upside down keeping in form cars on bad roads traveling too quickly backing into walls and other machines.
You can't expect someone starting a job new to be paid the same as a lad with years of experience no matter what they are at that's why they have apprenticeship and internments in most other jobs.
If the op is asking for a set amount an hour with no experience the contractor might hire someone with a few years experience instead
However if he proves himself in the first week or two and see what he gets he can then ask for a raise or leave if not happy + go for the next driving job with some experience.
I would agree that someone with a few seasons done should be paid the same as anyone else once they turn up in the morning and look after their tractor.

I'd expect a 16 yo to be in minimum wage ~€8.75/hour.

Maybe if he proved exceptional after a while a bit more.

minimum wage if you are under 18 is €6.06. This is what you would get working in the local Centra so I wouldnt expect any more driving tractors

A thought, if you're working with bales he might be giving so much per bale too. Maybe it's a rarity now but I used to be on 50c per bale, whether I drove the mower, baler or wrapper.

For a 10 to 12hr day if you're doing a good job, that min wage figure tallies with about €100 a day
You might have tax deducted but you'll get it back and you may be USC exempt being a student?
FRS iirc take an hour off your total for lunch ,2 ifit's provided for you

Asked a young lad who works in a garage the other day "how come your not at the silage this year" his reply "at €3 per hour they can get somebody else" ;)

get in early, grease and diesel your machine and be ready to work first - always. even if it means your sitting in the cab with your flask waiting for the boss man to get up.
get a name as a hard worker and it will stick, you will never be short of work as long as you can adapt - word does spread.
start slowly - you are still 16. after a while the wages will increase(maybe it will be in another job) but the experience will stand to you.

once you get the name for it you can slacken off (as long as nobody notices!!)

10/hr. You'd want to be mad to be getting paid by the day at it.

Hi, Just a thought. Is the contractor doing your Dad a favour? Just that the contractor round here often has a young lad with him. They work with him for a few weeks to learn how to use the machines.

They don't get paid very much.

Jaysus tis easy get of the point. I don't know how loosening a button and dealing with the aftermath will help this young lad get a few extra quid for a days work. :-) :-D ;-)

20 pound could buy you 12 pints of beer and second hand VCR player along with 5 brand new VHS tapes
( so you could record live TV shows while away and watch them later on )

    Good ould times..
