I was told a few weeks ago by a VW garage in Sandyford that I will need the timing chain replaced in my VW Golf MK5 TSI 122.

Where is the cheapest timing chain replacement service? Volkswagen wanted to charge me €1,800...

Hope to get this done asap so quick responses much appreciated!

    Thanks

Get quotes from a few independent garages, they will be a hell of a lot cheaper. You should be able to get it done properly using genuine VW parts (with the same 2 year warranty that the dealer offers) for €750 or so. Any quotes cheaper than that I would be wary of as they may not be doing everything that is needed.

@OP what year is your golf and how many kilometres on it? I only ask because Mrs Veetwin has the same car. (2008 but with very small mileage)

What mileage is on the car veetwin? We have replaced chains on the twincharged 140/170 versions with as little as 50k kms done, the 122 version is much less troublesome though.

    Mine stretched around 60000km in a 122

It's the 122 version, 2008 with about 50k km on it. Serviced religiously every year. Is there any way of knowing if the chain needs replacing?

The engine warning light usually comes on. Very often there is noise from the chain on startup as well.

Buddy's 06 passat 1.6 fsi was done recently, chain rattle on startup and cam sensor fault showed up on vagcom. He payed around the €550 mark for the chain/tensioner kit including labour from a reputable independent garage here in cork city..

There's 95,000km on mine now. There's a small ticking on a cold start for a few seconds but I think it's the valve lifters more than the chain. No warning lights though and it's running like a watch. Full Skoda history.

On the turbocharged cars VW recommend replacing the turbo oil feed line and also replacing the oil pump pickup pipe at the same time as the chain and associated parts so the total cost of the job on a TSI is more than the n/a 1.6 FSI.

Hey guys thanks for the quick replies - and apologies for my delay in reply, I didn't realise there were comments as I got no email notifications, I'll have to fix that!

    So my car is;
2008 Volkswagen Golf GT Sport 1.4 TSi DSG 5DR 122 Black
123,000 km on it at the moment - this is another reason I think I may need to replace the timing chain.

It makes a slight rattle when cold - no warning light at all but I might check any errors with the Torque Pro app.

Other than this scary subject, the car is mint and drives perfect, no other rattles or troubles.

€750 is certainly closer to the price I was looking for!!

Hi George, should those lines and pipes be changed anyway, even if the chain is fine?

    122bhp on 60,000kms.

I'd say it's a warranty issue with VW, if you don't change the turbo pipes etc. they won't guarantee the components.

I don't think the chain needs to be replaced because of a slight rattle on the first start of the day. What other reasons is your garage giving you?

The main reason I'd say is that they want my hard earned money!

I'm just scared this really nice car is going to blow up someday and leave an repairable hole in my wallet.

What should I look out for for signs of the chain loosening and tensioners maxed etc?

Don't take my word as gospel but I'd wait until there were more symptoms than just a slight rattle on the first start of the day. Whether you do it today or do it when the light is on which could be in 2 years time, providing the timing doesn't actually slip, it's still going to cost the same to get done. Keeping good quality clean oil in the engine will certainly help. If George tells you different do what he says as he's working on them on a daily basis but I really wouldn't panic about it.

I usually see obvious running issues and engine management light on on these when they've stretched
