Replaced upstairs window last year as couldnt get out previous one in event of fire. I was born awkward and the current restrictor on the new window outsmart me 50% of the time when I try to uncatch to open window fully. In a fire situation reckon I'll never be able to open with the panic so am no better off than was before!! Can I remove the catch on one of the panes? No children in the house so no risks . Seems like some restrictors are advertised as permanent fixtures . I probably need to contact munster joinery but hoped someone here would know. ...

Most restrictors are held in place by 2 screws and if so just unscrew the restrictors at the bottom.
If this is not the case a picture would be very helpful

I have been exactly in that situation too, a few years back.

This is what I decided: there are building regs, and there is reality.

Several years ago I bought two escape ladders, the type you hang over the window board and (hopefully) climb down in the event of a fire.

I left the window restrictors in place until the youngest kid was 12.

Then I removed the window restrictors and trained the kids in how to open the bedroom window, chuck out the ladder and escape.
It's one of those many decisions you make as a parent, window restrictors vs ease of egress.

    I decided

My windows are difficult to get out of Id say, they narrow as they open as the way the hinges work the edge of the frame thats closer to the hinge moves inwards to the centre of that opening space.

Still I wanted to get some restrictors as my son is getting to an age where he can move chairs, climb and has manipulated keys to unlock doors.

Im afraid of him getting to a window (even a fall from a downstairs window would be onto concrete) so want to sort it, anyone selling theirs? or where can I pick some up in Dublin?

edit these are the components Im talking about,
the pointed component engages into the part on the right for the room windows and on the ensuite it is at the top,
these dont seem to engage correctly.
I can push/manipulate the room window to engage but the ensuite is not possible.

Can I get new hinges? where? the pointed part and the receiving (cup like part?) seem worn and like they could be removed without replacing the entire hinge, but if the hinge replacement is necessary, then so be it.

There's a crowd in Coolock called Window & Door Accessories, they have a load of releasable restrictors, handles and hinges.
Should be able to sort you out
