Hi.I have an 11 year old mk5 vw golf 1.4 75hp (standard non tsi/fsi engine) with 170k miles on it. I've always used castrol edge 5w30 every 10k miles and its served the engine very well.only servicing and timimg belts needed.it can burn a bit of oil between services, but I keep an eye on it.what is the best advice with the higher miles.continue as is or change the oil type?

Increase the frequency of the oil changes would probably be the way forward.

Some people change to 5w40 and claim reduced oil usage. Not sure if this really works but might be worth a try.

Continue as you are doing imo.

For every 10k miles? That's excellent!

I bought it the last few times from amazon for a good price.but now they wont ship to Ireland and with the exchange rate its gone up quite a bit on the likes of halfords and micksgarage.Best I can get now is 145 for 20L delivered from Germany.

Your brother must be sailing close to record breaking territory for that engine. What year is your brothers.

Good going. I had a 98 mk4 with the same/similar engine, but only put 60k up on it from new before changing to the mk5. Have it from new,so know that it's been well looked after.Goes to show regular servicing is the life of a car, even ones that have engines with known weaknesses.

I used to get oil on Amazon too until they have changed their shipping policy for Ireland. You can try using this crowd: https://www.brakeandclutch.ie/. I got 20 litres of Valvoline 5w30 for 100 euros delivered just last month. They also have Castrol. It is good to see an Irish business with such wide selection of engine oils at very competitive price.

Their bricks and mortar shop has a good reputation for price around limerick from what I've heard.

For 20 litres, this is the best I've found. They deliver to Ireland for €25.

I don't see the valvoline 20 litres on their site just now. Is it a good oil (VW approved)?

I'm very picky about an oil that I use in my cars and in fairness their were very good in sourcing one for me that they did not have on their web at the time (Valvo FE 5w30). Getting 4x5L cans also gave me a nice discount and at 100 euros delivered I can not see how even Amazon could beat that. I'm not associated with them but with this level of service and attractive pricing I want them to get more business so they can see themselves their doing something good. Something that in my opinion Irish market has lacked for a long time.

Corrib oil or shannonside oil on the dock road in Limerick.
They are in Ennis too so i presume there are other premises around the country.
You can Shell Helix ultra 20litres for just under 130euros.
Also have cheaper oil for 100euro and 80euros I never asked the brand names for them tho.

I'd say this is the oil that matches Castrol specs:
    https://www.brakeandclutch.ie/valvoline-synpower-xtreme-xl-iii-c3-sae-5w-30-5-ltr-pack.php

If you email them they will probably do a deal on 4x5L bundle.

At least as good as Castrol. In my personal opinion - better.

George. Do you mind me asking what you guys use/ recommend for this engine or even any idea what vw workshops use. The castrol was always in my budget but went up in price.then was able to get it from amazon resonably.now its not so reasonable. Also it seemed to be the one that was most highly rated, maybe i got caught by marketing spiel.I'd like to put in good oil that will keep the car going for another few years if possible.just dont want to be paying for a brand name if there is another more resonable oil thats just as good or maybe even better.

    VW dealers use Castrol.

We use Fuchs oils, specifically GT1 5w30 XTL which is the Fuchs equivalent of Castrol Edge FST.

Is fuchs diesel oil as good as castrol edge turbo diesel?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,728 ✭✭✭George Dalton

In my opinion Fuchs and Castrol are on a par quality wise. Both are first fill suppliers to the German motor industry so pretty much any new German car that rolls off the production line has either Castrol or Fuchs oil in the engine. That's good enough for me...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,662 ✭✭✭walus

My personal opinion on Castrol is that it is seriously overpriced for what it is. On top of that the quality depends on where you get it from i.e. German Castrol is a different grade lubricant to what you get say in Romania (Castrol use local blending facilities). Also likelihood of coming across a fake Castrol is the highest of all oils available in Europe. Genuine Castrol Edge is a decent product but there are better oils available for less - simple as.

They make very good oils too. And are very honest about the type of the base stock. They clearly state if its Full Synthetic or if it Synthetic Technology (so called HC - hydrocrack). For the likes of Castrol even a s...ty Magnatec is full synthetic. I've used them before but sadly not easily available in Ireland.

The designation of HC Synthetic and PAO/Ester Synthetic is unique to Germany as the oil companies had a fight over what was and was not considered synthetic.
In Germany Castrol sued BP over calling Hydro cracked (HC) mineral oil "Synthetic" and won.
In the US some judge ruled that Group 3 oils HC could be called synthetic.
So most of the world will buy HC oil labelled as Synthetic and never know the difference.

That is correct. It was the case maybe 15 years ago. LM however keep this policy across the board irrespectively the country they sell to. To put it simply in their book HC is HC Synthetic Technology, PAO/Ester is Full Synthetic.
