Stages powermeter problem.

    Hi all,

I have my stages powermeter for over a month now and today I could not get it to connect to my garmin head unit. I don't believe the battery is gone because they say on their website that the battery will last 200hrs of riding and I haven't done that in a month. It just won't pick it up. Is there anything I could try? I manually put in the sensor code into head unit trying to pair it but that didn't work either. I spun the crank when the head unit was on and that's normally picks up the signal. Didn't work today though. Any ideas?

Probably the battery, its a known issue with them. See here.

Had the same thing happen to me about a month ago. COntacted stages. They had a replacement cover and seal out to me with a week

IN the mean time replace the battery. Make sure to earth the battery connectors before replacing them. Also Stages suggested that if you wedge the connector pin at the base it helps sell it better.

If you PM me your email I'll send on what stages sent to me

Is it failing with ANT+ only? Is there a Bluetooth signal to the Stages Power App?

    Hi all,

I replaced battery and it's now working. Kind of surprised that the battery would have died that quick. On my last ride before I had this issue my current power output was a lot lower that it should have been and I knew I had some bit of an issue. On flat ground when I was putting on the power it was reading 60-80watts and I knew it should have been a lot higher. I then stopped the ride recalibrated my powermeter and it worked but then it would not pair with the garmin on my ride yesterday. Replaced battery and it's working as normal now.

Would it be worth covering the battery cover with a piece of duct tape to stop possible water splashing into the system or is it fine without such measures?

You have the battery drain issue, common with Stages although I thought newer models and the latest firmware update had resolved that. Anyway, it's definitely the battery drain issue, don't bother with duct tape just contact Stages support and you'll have a new one fairly quick. It's a pain in the neck but their support is good. When you get your new one make sure the firmware is up to date, I'd assume it is if it's a replacement but no harm making sure.

I bought this powermeter in a LBS but would it be best to contact stages directly?

I bought the powermeter last week in April as new. The LBS fitted it to my bike. I assume the battery was new on purchase. I have a nice bit of cycling done in that time but not 200hrs. That's what stages says the duration of battery should last before replacing. I updated the garmin head unit few weeks ago, should I do so again?

Might have been sitting on a shelf in the LBS for a whIle so it could be an older production model. You need to update the firmware in the stages unit itself, not the garmin, do this before you get onto support, it's the first thing they'll tell you to do. Technically, or rather legally you probably should go through the LBS, but I'd just get straight onto their UK support, as far as I remember it's Madison. They really are very good to deal with, I should know, I'm on my 4th replacement unit at this stage. In fairness it's been fine since late last year and the latest firmware should have resolved any lingering issues, touch wood.

How do you update the firmware on the stages? Does that not go through some head unit to do so? Sorry for the stupid question.

Just download the android or iphone app and it'll guide you through it. Details here....

Im on my 4th meter (Ultegra) for this issue.
On my most recent replacement (2 weeks ago) I was told by the European support that the date stamp on the inside of the battery cover (the bit that comes off) will cause this problem if the date stamp is Oct or Nov 2014.

See the attached image of the last one that failed, the arrow points at the 10 or 11 and there is a "14" stamped in the middle. 10/2014 or 11/2014.

Oh and I asked how long does the warranty last ..."one year from date of purchase", even though I bought mine last October between sending them back and getting a replacement Ive been without the meter for about 6 weeks in total. No hint of them extending the warranty!

OK lads battery was completely flat today when I first tested it, so the powermeter in question has an issue.

I downloaded the firmware after installing it with another battery and I will test again tomorrow before returning the whole unit. Battery icon was full in the stages powermeter app. I can't believe it is doing this 1.5 months after purchase. It was working fine up to now. I do think the cover on it needs to be covered with tape once I have the problem fixed. It was a wet night when I encountered my first problem with this and it was working perfect until recently. I will know tomorrow and end of this week if it needs to go back or not. Il just make sure the new updated firmware hasn't fixed my powermeter problem.

Sounds like an identical issue to mine too. Got a stages a few months back, was fine for a while then it began to constantly go dead, every few days.

Got in touch with stages - sent it back to them, they had a new one back to me within a few days and this new one has been perfect for the past few months now, no battery drain issues at all.
