I have been trying to get my head around using a pair of forks with a carbon steerer but no steel/aluminium crown race! Thought there was something missing but was told this is correct, the carbon steerer has a bevelled crown that fits straight into a steel bearing in headset! I still can't think that's right so that is why I am here. To ask has anyone a fork using this set up?

You should be OK. I have just built up a frame like this, even though I was supplied with a crown race.

I e-mailed the manufacturer to be sure and they confirmed the fork fitted directly into the bearing in the head tube. All is fine so far.

Well, I have sent off a request for details on the fork and steerer so shall await. Meanwhile I would love to know more about why steerer crown races have gone this way so if any body would like to enlighten me would be most grateful. Just if there are any advantages in using a carbon integrated race? Strength? Shock absorbing perhaps?

My guess is to avoid the potential for damage when installing or removing a crown race. Plenty of people get by installing or removing races on metal steerers with flathead screwdrivers and the like, but it would be asking for trouble to try the same on a carbon steerer.
