Golf cheats

I play casually, not a member of a club or gui. Once a week. Bit more in the summer as work allows.

One thing that is starting to bother me a bit as i have improved is people who are subtle but cheat none the less.

We are all average golfers (me a bit lower average) so we mark points off 18 and also play matchplay.

The cheating im talking about is not counting a drop shot or giving yourself a putt without a playing giving it to you or the more blatant saying you had a 6 on a par 4 just so you cant get a point from the hole.

I dont play to "win" as I am not really that consistent yet (playing 3 years while people I play with are all 10+ years)

I used to call them up on it but while I am trying to improve they are just happy to get a win. I even know their "tell" as to when they are doing it even if I dont see them do it.

Should I just ignore it as I have done or call it out. Its rare I would win anyway but anytime I have a chance it doesnt make a difference as I always lose by the magical 1 point.or in extreme cases the mystical countback.

Sorry its so long just couldnt see any recent treads about it.

Why play with cheats? You aren't going to change them so change your playing group. If they cheat in golf then they aren't nice people.

If you do still want to play with them then do not accept any cheating and always call them up on it. If they can't "count" then politely correct them. Ask for all putts to be holed as it is bad practice to not hole out as you can struggle in stroke play when you have to hole out.

If you feel under pressure when you call them out then play with other decent people.

Just wondering if its a common thing. I do call them out sometimes but dont always spot the drop out of a bad lie ya know. I dont understand the mentality of pretending your score is better than it is. Defeats the purpose. Cant understand the mentality. Im just trying to beat myself never mind anyine else

I know a limited amount of people to play with and its only one who is at it.

So is it just one person who is at it? Do you play with other people? How do they feel about it?

It's very uncommon in my experience but I have generally played with people who have played a long time and who are very respectful.

Life is too short to play with cheats. You'll eventually find decent people to play with and you'll enjoy the game so much more with them.

They ignore it as it is a casual game and its just the way it is. Its a strange time to cheat as there is no "gain" bar boasting. This person is in a society and plays comps regularly.

He has to cheat me in matchplay but can win prizes

How does it go down in clubs/societies?

As I understand if, you just play casual or social golf so there is no competition - just you and some pals knocking it around. I don't know how you agree handicaps etc. but the rules of golf are either enforced or not. If you were in a club or playing in a proper competitiion, that sort of stuff would not be tolerated.
But if it is just and your mates playing for the coffee afterwards, it is up to you but if you are serious about getting better etc. you need to do something about it - and widen your playing circle.

If they say 6 to you, you give him a quizzical look and then start "mentally" counting his score. If he gives even half a **** about his integrity he'll change his score. Otherwise it's time to find new playing partners

If it is in competition, I wouldn't be that polite - or coy - about it. If you saw 7 shots or whatever, you talk him through it, shot by shot. Once is usually enough. Easier if playing with people you don't know but you can't put up with that nonsense.
I played a lot in the US where most club golf is casual and the stuff that went on was unreal. But if there is nothing at stake, leave them to their delusions.

we have a guy who got suspended from our club in recent weeks for cheating. Not allowed on course, to use its facilities or go club house/ restaurant for 2 years or to hold a GUI handicap either. Unfortunately he was also on our barton cup team this year and although we were doing well had to forfit it.

Moral of the story if someone is cheating and you know it dont let it continue, call them on it and if the continue dont play with them, eventually if the cheater cant get a partner they might start playing the game properly

How does it go down in clubs/societies?

I've been on the committee of a society and anyone found deliberately cheating (cheating is deliberate I guess) then they would be suspended for a year or else banned depending on the severity.

Clubs would do something similar. Anyone found cheating may as well leave anyway as not many would have any time for them and the mud would stick for years.

The nature of golf is that people must be trusted. Anyone cheating should not be tolerated. The rules of golf are rules and not guidelines.

If you don't mind me asking.
What was the nature of the cheating and how was it brought to light.?

There's a lad in our place and if his ball goes into long grass or trees his usual reply is 'dont worry about me, I'll find it better myself '.

I dont know how people do this. It would actually kill me to think if i did something like that and beat my playing partner.
Even for myself i couldnt, it would eat away at me.
For hard shots where you put yourself in trouble i like the challenge of getting out of it.
But there is plenty of people out there who dont give a toss

We had a member suspended for 6 months late last year for building their handicap with 0.1s. There was never any announcement or posting about the suspension but word does spread eventually so whatever cheating people get up to it's not worth destroying your reputation over.
Personally I'd have preferred if an announcement had been made (no need to mention the player or the specifics) as it would highlight that members are being monitored and it would encourage all members to be more vigilant in their observations.

Obviously without going into absolute specifics or clubs, but surely that's a suspension that's on very dodgy ground, no ? Was it more sinister than "playing badly" wink, wink ? Or were they breaking a rule ?

It was a bit worse than playing badly !! Rules were broke (a lot of them). Was a fair punishment!!

I think your handicap secretary/committee might have been wise not to make that announcement. Wasn't alleged 'handicap building' the subject of that crazy costly legal case in Hermitage a while back? Judge concluded it was defamatory to make the 'handicap building' claim but because it was stated in a private letter it wasn't seen by public so therefore he was not publicly defamed. It's a ballsy move by your club to take that action. They must feel they are on very strong ground.
