With a little effort it takes about 10 seconds to find out.

I would try for another opinion.

I have not done one but I would be pretty sure a replacement unit would need to be reconfigured to your car (ie matched)
Someone with Ford IDS (maindealer software) or software capable of this.
Also your keys may need to be reprogrammed.

George Dalton (member here) based in Portlaoise and specializes on Ford could advise you better.

You understood "tdi" right? Theres a certain few TLAs (three letter acronyms ) that are common to many cars and have been in common use for many years now.

It would be logical for the original poster to assume that anyone who could post a constructive answer to his question would understand BCM.

Other terms you will see in common use are DMF DPF ECU MAF MAP TCS ABS EBD and FAP fluid. Some are more common than others but nobody is going to type out diesel particulate filter every time in case someone with a useful answer didn't understand DPF.

I dont even claim to be an amateur mechanic, but I like to learn bout problems cars experience, esp when I own the same car.

I find these typical boards posting interesting & educational - hence why I feel its important to Type the Problem area or part, at least once in the original post.

I think most people would find this a reasonable requirement.

Maybe it's just me but when someone asks a question, technicial or otherwise I like to see they have put some research in to trying to get the answer and not just expecting to get the silver bullet.

Whether it's an amatuer or professional everyone gets stuck sometimes and needs to seek help or advice but in todays age of information technology there is a mountain of knowledge out there if we look for it.

If someone asks for help on here there is usually a good response from members. Some posters will come on with good background information and will have done some research first, others will expect the magic bullet and wont even have the courtsey to post the fix or follow through.

There are hundreds of acronyms and if I came across one I didnt understand I expct I would find it if I googled "automotive acronyms" or just typed the letters in the address line instead of posting something like "talk english"

When I searched wikipedia for BCM I got "Billion Cubic Meters of Natural Gas". If I'd known it was body control module I wouldn't have had to look in Wikipedis.

Also, Boards is a good source of information.

I couldnt agree more. This is a DIY forum and everyone should be encouraged to ask questions no matter how basic they may seem and I encourage that.

My issue was not the question but rather how it was asked.

Yeah I also never heard of a BCM before. And the request for clarification were largely snotty. So, yeah.

Back on track folks. If you know the issue, and possibly the fix, please post. If not, you can ask but do not drag thread offtopic with arguments.

A Body Control Module these days typically sits on the main system bus talking to the central computer and looks after things like the immobiliser, locking, power mirrors, etc. My own crackpot theory is that they have no idea what's wrong with the car and are chucking the farm on the (logically) nearest convenient UBT*. Can you provide a description of what actually appears to be wrong with the car?

    +1 jimgoose.
Never accept the customers diagnosis. Most would say "yeah, needs a new clutch" when in reality it needs sparkplugs.
So, OP, what exactly is the car doing or not doing?

    Hi folks

Thanks for all the response, sorry for delay but was a bit of hassle ; after 3 and a half weeks the car is back.
For those asking the problem it was engine failure on dash although this can be a number of things.
The fix was BCM and for those who mentioned software programming after fit are correct; keys also need to be reprogrammed to talk to ECU .

Thanks guys hopefully its a costly fix no else has to deal with

There's an electrical place (hamiltons) just off Harcourt street who do this kind of stuff, my comfort/convenience control module (CCM - duh!) went on the passat and they replaced it with new one pretty quickly. was about 5 - 600 euro I think.
On the Passat the engineers put it in the lowest point in the car to make sure it gets damp :-)
