DHL Payment, too much?

Ordered an Android TV Box from Geekbuying.com, your typical Chinese gadget shop. Total cost was about 60 euro including DHL delivery.

Now DHL are saying I'm liable for VAT/Customs. That's fine except the bill is 32 euro. Is this normal? Wasn't expecting to pay over 50% of the purchase price on a tax bill.

Are DHL scamming here or is this normal?

All couriers charge an "admin fee" in addition to any VAT due for their trouble in collecting any VAT/duty.

VAT should be 23% of purchase price + shipping costs. No additional duty due as the item cost less than €150.

I think (open to correction) that the max admin fee is €15. It should be listed separately on the invoice/receipt from DHL.

www.dutycalculator.com says that €13.80 is the tax due. So add a maximum of €15 and you're still short of what they're charging you.

    I'd query it definitely.

is the €15 DHL fee not subject to vat as well? that would bring it up to what was charged.

    Yeh it is.

They often use a fairly generous exchange rate too. Not so long ago a $99 order was charged VAT as a €99 purchase so the rate they use can make it a bit more too.

Given all of the above i think it is fair to say that DHL are not scamming the OP.

Depends on if you call their admin fee a scam! Still saucy enough to be spending 50% extra on tax and admin whatever way you look at it.

Should have gone Chinese Snail Mail. I could have waited!

And it may still have been pulled by Customs and you'd have to pay the An Post administration fee.

Oh, of course but bigger chance of escaping the fee and they would have a much smaller admin fee I'd imagine.

i.e. getting away with paying the VAT-free price.

A major reason goods from overseas (outside EU) appear cheaper is due to the absence of VAT. Similarly Irish retail prices V UK retail prices, 23% VAT v 20%.
