JA question

    Hi

I am in receipt of JA for 3 months (plus 4 months last year).

I wish to start a self employed business this autumn.

It will not make much money (less than 5000) in the next 2 years.

How can I retain my JA during this time?

    Thanks

just moved onto this ourselves, think you need to be on jsa for 12 months, so apply after this time..

It looks like you wont be able to apply for BTWEA as you dont have the length of time on JA. What you can do though is you can tell your local office that your are starting self-employment and they will have your means reviewed by an inspector. Its unlikely that any means will be applied for the first 6 months and the inspector will be unable to project earnings from a starting base of zero. The inspector will more than likely ask you to keep all receipts and will call you for interview again and then will project earnings for the first year.

Thank you all so much for your replies.

I met the time periods for BWTEA but I am unsure whether my proposal will be approved.

As a fall back, I would like to become self employed while retaining the JA - but I am unsure how to approach this with the Department. They seemed to think that you have to be available for work for at least 3 of 7 days to keep JA.

I would be working 5 full days but would not be earning any money to speak of.. so will have no income, effectively like work experience.

    :(

If you are self employed you dont have to be available for 3 of 7 days.

Thanks Eastbono, can you please elaborate - I may have got the number of days mixed up but would appreciate any further info you can provide, the social were fairly clear about being unable to keep JA if self employed.

    many thanks

When you are self employed your means from self employment are assessed by an inspector. Your claim then gets a sub category of semp and you still sign once a month and collect your payment in the post office. I have never seen the 3 in 7 rule applied to self employed people. Perhaps you need to speak to some one else in the office that you go to.
