Easier to travel to DUblin to buy something than to travel abroad.
Sure I know meself, the brother bought a 2011 berlingo off of one of them types. We could probably have gotten it chaper ourselfs like but it was just easy to buy from the guys that already had the car in the country I mean it was under 6000 and cheaper than private sale ones and less miles because it was an expost van form the UK

The price on the window. This Audi is €Xk cheaper than the Audi up the road in Audi North (Or whatever) Therefore, its the same car and I will save some money only to spend it 2 months later when the gearbox falls out.

You have no idea how much you can influence a sale by being marginally cheaper than someone else. Better yet, put something in someone's hands and its usually a done deal. If its tangible and appeals to the somewhat prevalent 'cheap' mindset of Irish car buyers, you'll shift it regardless of whats wrong with it.

People don't care about the car, they care about the price being blinded by the false economy of such a mindset.

I've noticed your threads are almost always putting the motor trade down and making them out to be thieves and scam artists at large. A guy I went to school with started out in one of these portacabins bringing in English stock. He sells up to 30 cars a month and stands over everything he sells and if he says it has x miles on it then it has x miles on it and if it's not crashed it's not crashed. All from his portacabin.
I've worked in the motor trade myself to know that there are a lot of crooks but the honest garage men outnumber the crooks.

In what strand of motor trade? Sales? Mechanic? Motor factors? If you don't mind me asking that is.

parts main dealer . i would sooner buy from cargiant than those guys not long open around naas road . nothing wrong with your friend starting out in portacabin but still cant see why anyone would buy a car costing big money from a dealer with no track record / reputation . would sooner go to uk and buy at auction / cargiant more fun cheaper and less risky.

With low PCP rates here and crap sterling rates plus the hassle of importing a car buying of a main dealer makes better sense now..

You are buying the car, not the dealer. If you do all the correct checks and the car is ok, what exactly is the problem?

Getting recourse against someone who has made a statement and investment in their business & brand versus someone who perhaps leased a portacabin and land is very different. I know it could end up the same but the chances of someone who has made significant investment in their business (e.g. Buildings, owning the land, proper branding and development) being a 'cowboy' is far lower than someone who is dealing out of a prefab. Would you rather spend €20k in a shed or in a building that is owned & branded by the individual you are giving the money to?

But like you said, provided the car is sound then you are in a good position no matter what.

I personally wouldn't buy a car off a portacabin-style dealer unless it was extremely cheap (like < €3000 cheap) or whatever I could realistically afford to "write off" if the worst happened and I got screwed. Been burned like this earlier in my driving career.

What I don't get is people buying modern, new-ish, cars from private sellers where you have no comeback at all!

i would be more worried about the car having been crashed / stolen in uk and cloned things like that i am a dub myself but wouldnt deal with a ' howaya ' type
that u find at these places . decent used car dealers will previously have worked in main dealers b4 going it alone - theres definitely washing going on in these places!

I thought you were a car salesman yourself for some reason
