BSE - Dairy Cow. Need a question answered...

I am vegetarian, vegan most of the week but at weekends I'd have a bit buttered toast, baked goods, chocolate etc.

After hearing on the news that the cow suspected of BSE was a dairy cow, it has me really concerned, I presumed in my ignorance that dairy cows were herbivores and only ate grass?

Why would a dairy cow be fed that disgusting bonemeal they were talking about and is this common that dairy cows are fed other animals?

If so, I'm vegan from tonight, I would hate to think that milk, yogurt, cheese etc is the by-product of an animal fed with animal-meal. Anyone that could shed some light would be much appreciated.

No ruminant can be fed meat and bone meal.
Pigs can(under strict licence) be fed fish bone meal which isnt connected to BSE but looks identical to meat and bone meal.

Firstly meat and bone meal has been banned for years in this country.a cows main diet is grass or silage (made from preserved grass)and concentrate containing cereals Like barley, wheat oats, maize meal ,proteins like soya bean meal, and fibre like beet pulp or soya hulls..no need to worry as a dairy farmer and small beef farmer I stand over my produce 100%.europe subsides us for producing quality food with strict guidelines to follow.we can be inspected any day of the year with just a phone call to say an inspector is on his way

OP, ganmo has your question answered pretty much spot on above.

This practice stopped and is outlawed following the major outbreak.

There is no safer meat to consume than Irish beef, same goes for Irish dairy products.

People are most likely at more risk from the chlorinated wash used on pre prepared veg than they are eating irish beef or dairy products.

This was an animal that died and was collected for disposal.

It was never going to enter the food chain.

There was not link ever between dairy products and cjd.

Meat and bone meal have been outlawed since the late ninteys.

You have absolutely nothing to fear.

Kovu. I was in a nice restaurant in London many years ago when "vegetarianism" and "veganism" was the cool thing to be into.
My guest also retorted to the 'cool' veggie/vegan much the same as I posted.
Know where you're bread is buttered and don't kowtow to the 'cool'.

I've nothing to be ashamed of ...

Reasonable question. You have absolutely nothing to worry about. We cannot feed meat and bone meal as its called to our cows or beef cattle. I cannot explain this unconfirmed case. I wouldn't even know where I could get M&B meal if I wanted some. I certainly couldn't get legally.

Please continue to enjoy a glass or two of milk with a buttery toasty.

No one cares what you eat. Everyone is free to choose what they like. No need for the crude aggression.

    Likewise.

But I don't come on here with the 'holier than thou' "COOL'.

    I am a carnivore. I eat meat.
    So what?...
Why bend over to the vegan/veggie brigade?
I eat meat. To me that is as cool as being a vegan/vegetarian. Sue me...

    Technically your an omnivore .

Op didnt ask your opinion on his complete weekly intake of nutrients, he merely asked if dairy products were still safe.

True. But he did explain quite clearly to everyone that he was vegan/veggie(?).

Maybe we should all genuflect, collectively, when someone "hip" and "cool", makes the same emotionally insecure, plea to the good of mankind?

I live now in a society where vegetarianism and veganism is seen for what it is. Just that, a choice of lifestyle, not some life philosophy where you can assume the higher moral ground.

    Again. Grow up.

Jesus Dawggone, stop drinking and go to bed. You are losing the run of yourself. The Op asked a question and he has received answers and thanked those posters. Mods should probably close the thread.

Indeed. OP, you can rest assured tonight that no MBM (meat & bone meal) products are being fed to dairy/beef cattle in Ireland.

I hope we have not put you off your weekend dairy treats :D
