Painting Roof Slate?

    Painting Roof - Slate
Our roof slates have badly discoloured, once black many are now light grey. They started to fade within the guarantee period and we have recently got the go ahead to repair them. Painting them has been suggested. Anyone know anything about this? Is painting slate the way to go? Can you get a guarantee with this? Any information would be greatly appreciated. We have to pay for some of it ourselves so want to get it right and not make it worse or watch our money go down the drain, literally.

I have seen one case where the contractors damaged aluminimum guttering when doing the colouring. Also, there was curling of the slate (slight movements) which carried on after the colouring which resulted in small whitish lines beside the slates where they had moved. It was very evident on the southern facing side of the roof.
