Car cut out and wouldn't start after a jump

was driving the car and the engine lost power.
Pulled in and tried to restart but it did not kick in.
Got a Jump and it sounded like it was about to start but never kicked in
It was only a short drive 3 km when this happened but when i popped the hood the engine seemed hot even though the temperature gauge on the dashboard was not showing as over heating

Does this sound like an over heating issue or a spark plug/start issue?

Battery gone or start motor would be my first guess. Did the engine turn over when you jump started it? I presume it has fuel in it?

plenty of fuel, I charged/jumped the battery and i only got the battery last year. fairly good battery.
when i turn the key it if i put my foot on the accelerator it revs but it never kicks on if you know what i mean.

Is the start motor a big deal to replace

Get a mechanic to look at it. They can check that the basics work, like fuel reaching the cylinders etc.

Does sound like a starter alright. Not an awfully complicated job but it depends on the car.

How could a starter motor make the car cut out..... use the heads people

    Hi bowlardo,

If your engine is turning over but not firing it's not the starter as it's doing its job.
It's a spark or fuel issue.
Worst case by the way you said it just cut out it could be a snaffled timing belt either.
    Was it due one?

This is exactly what happened my last car. Just about got her home ; mechanic changed spark-plugs but on another drive not long after, the same stuttering started to happen & the power to the engine just started to go. Drove her home, full tank of petrol and have not used that car since. The engine-light was on with me though for some-time (even passed NCT's with this fault) but no obvious fault could be found & not worth serious time nor money to do necessary digging to find that fault.

Just waiting now for my last and first-ever car to be scrapped. Must take out the petrol first though.

Following in here to see what happens in your case :)
Hope it all works out for you,
    kerry4sam

I've had exactly this happen to me and the cause was water had gotten into the fuse box over a long period of time and corroded all the contacts. Had to get a replacement fuse box from an old banger and it was sorted.

Could be a crank angle sensor or various other things if you get somebody to run diagnostics it will probably tell you.

Timing belt, from bitter experience, sounds like a suspect.

Thanks for the replies i went back over and it started. It is in a fairly busy public car park so going to leave it till tomorrow night when i can get my mechanic mate to look at it and not be in anyones way
It's a 98 almera 145,000 on the clock so it owes me nothing. I think it could be time for the car grave yard but it was running fine and there was never any issue . got serviced about 2 months ago. i think (hope ) it something small.

Timing belt is out if it started.

    Fuel pump intermittent fault?

my guess is you blew a diode or something when jumping it.

Blocked throttle bay? Sounds like it is suffocating so no air mixing with fuel.

Timing belt is a chain I believe, and a fairly robust one in the 1.4. Pump is a possibility. ( I had a 1.4 sunny for a while, pump gave out, the gearbox was the finisher though)

OP - can you hear the pump priming when you turn the key to the position just before "start" - a kinda whirrr noise with a sudden stop?

    If so pump is fine.

If not, you may get another go out of it if you batter it but probly best left alone if you don't know where to find it!
