Improving TV sound on a budget

    Hi folks,

I'm trying to research a possible gift for someone and was hoping the more learned folks could maybe help me out.

Looking to improve the sound experience from a Panasonic TX-L47ET5B set up in a sitting room. Usage would be for watching movies and music. Not gaming.

Budget is only ~€150 so I'm wondering if:

    A) Is this budget even enough to buy something that would make improvements?
    B) If so at this budget am I better sticking with soundbars or speakers?
    C) Given the above can anyone suggest suitable options?

Thanks for any help or suggestions and let me know if more information is needed.

In my opinion a soundbar is probably the best way to go on a budget. You won't get a great AV amp with speakers for that budget whereas you will get a decent soundbar easily on that budget.

For example the following is a very decent quality Sony bar:

Sony HT-CT60BT 2.1 Channel Surround Soundbar and Subwoofer with Bluetooth/NFC Function and is only £99.99 on Amazon Uk. I have had a Sony soundbar for a few years now and it is still going strong. The sound is excellent but just be aware that a 5.1 or 7.1 system will always beat a soundbar.

Yeah that's a good price alright and I don't think you'd regret it. Make sure to google how to set up the sound options if you get it as it can make a big difference to the sound quality. Best of luck with it.

You help is very much appreciated Irreverent.

No bother. The only other thing to check is make sure that the TV you will be using it on has an optical out port. Most TV's these days do have one. There is no hdmi connection on this soundbar so all audio comes through the optical port. If there is not one in the box you will need to get an optical lead (not expensive). The sound quality through optical is excellent though so no need to worry about that. The sound from any other components you add to the system (set-top box, blu-ray, xbox etc) will be routed through the tv and out through that optical port, then out via the soundbar. Best of luck with it.
