Router to replace Eircom Zyxel

I've a fairly poor Eircom broadband connection, about 2.4mps if I'm lucky. The router that Eircom supplied is a Zyxel D1000 model. The range is very poor with little or no signal beyond the room next to where the router is. I've tried range extenders but without any success.

Anyone suggest a good choice of replacement router with a view to increasing the range?

There could be other WiFi transmitters on the same channel which would decrease your signal.
If you have an android phone you can install an app called WiFi Analyzer.
This app will let you see what WiFi channels are clear and then you could set your Zyxel to the same (clear) channel.
It might not solve all the issues but at least give you more range.

We are in a detached house and out of range of any other routers so that isn't the problem as far as I can tell. Thick walls and elongated house design are more of a problem!

Homeplugs are what you want. A better router will make marginal difference to range.
