RSA Cycle Survey

A link to a survey for bike week popped up on my FB so went to fill it in.

This question stumped me a bit.....

    6. When is it ok to cycle two abreast? *This question is required.
    • Never
    • Always
    • On local roads
    • Before 7am and after 7pm

Now - I would have thought an answer like "When conditions deem it safe to do so" would have been more appropriate. I've answered "Always" but can just see the RSA publishing the results as "70% of cyclists think it's always ok to cycle two abreast"

    There was also...

    5. Which if any of these precautions do you take to keep yourself safe on the road when cycling? (choose all that apply) *This question is required.
    • Wear a helmet
    • Wear high-visibility clothing
    • Observe traffic lights
    • Observe the rules of the road
    • Use hand signals appropriately
    • Keep my distance from lorries/buses/other large vehicles
    • Be constantly on the watch out for hazards
    • Manage my speed
    • Other

It just seemed a bit like a non-cyclist put it together and that it's our responsibility to be safe on the road and keep out of the way of those who pay to use it...

    Bit harsh on the OP!

How? I thought it was an official survey. When I look at the link it seems to be a students survey. It also seems to be preoccupied solely with cyclists breaking lights. Th other questions seem a lead in to that only. As couerdelion it seems like a non cyclist wrote it. Cyclists in general don't seem to be that fixated on traffic lights. They'd be more interested in other issues. The only people who seem to obsess over it are drivers who don't cycle.

I really don't pay any attention to the RSA about anything. Especially since they now have their own private, secret interpretations of laws.

So maybe it is illegal to cycle two abreast. We'll have to wait for the RSA to consult their oracle. Good thing Delphi is in Mayo.

    Well that is interesting,

financial, commercial, scientific or technical or other information whose disclosure could reasonably be expected to result in a material financial loss or gain to the person to whom the information relates

Financial loss or gain if the info is released? The info relates to the law, are they saying the legal system will make or lose money on a law that is geenerally not enforced at the minute?

The unnamed legal firm would seem to be biased considering their history of 30 years, in favour of who I wonder

They can't find the relevant records on the cycle lane legal advice.

So the RSA said "No, you can't have that info, it's top-secret".
    And then later,
"Okay, it's not top secret, but we can't find it anywhere."

    Is that about right?

My guess is that they gave the intial advice that the ad showing the taxi stopping in the mandatory lane was ok off the top of someone's head and have been "fronting" since then to save face.

But I'm not involved in this FOI in any way, so I don't know.

Well there are some taxi drivers who are convinced that once they are setting down or collecting they can stop anywhere. Most know better but some are convinced that double yellows, on corners, on pedestrian crossings stuff that even the most inexperienced driver should no better about. I don't mean this in a facetious way, I have heard some saying this and I know another boardsie was berated when he pointed out to a taxi on the Clontarf Road where he was stopping was dangerous.

I would have ignorantly thought the regulation of taxi drivers might include a basic refresher on road safety and RTA on issuing of their license, more fool me.

I find taxi's the most unpredictable and erratic of all road users. Their dangerous stopping, and parking is yet another thing that can be added to the vast list of things that are largely not enforced.
