Howdy. Have we any V12 pilots here? BMW 7-Series, Aston Martin, XJS Jaaag, that kind of thing? It intrigues me to know how many of these sorts of old-school toffs are on the road, and how they behave in the "real" world in terms of fuel consumption, reliability, performance, overall "feelgood", etc. Oh yes, and pictures - lotsa pictures! :D

    Have at it!

I owned a 750 last year. 5.4 V12 in it. Stunning car to be honest, I won't divulge too much I'll wait for its current owner to come along...!

there is no point in owning a V12 if you are struggling to get by each month. They must be brutal on fuel too!

Sound like a six cylinder with no compression on starting ,
only desirable V12 would be from Ferrari or Lamborghini imho , other V12 s just make good cars nose heavy and inferior to their V8 relatives, just look at the Bentley continental V 8s , bettering its 12 cylinder predecessor .

Missing the other air box in that pic as it was off for painting but that's the belly of the beast.

I'm thinking of sprucing up the engine bay a little - maybe get the IMs powdercoated in a gunmetal grey or similar.

How many V12s have you driven?

The 4.0 in the Bentley is just the entry level model. The only thing it betters the big W12 in is fuel economy. The W12 TT is amazing, seriously powerful and so ridiculously smooth.

What ever happened to the guy with the 850csi? I remember he moved to NZ and took the car with him.

Would be nice to see it again.

Deadly! Is that large hose just above the dipstick the fuel line :confused:. I'm thinking either that or power steering :pac:.

Matt Simis was his user name. Havn't seen him in ages either.

I have had a few V12 engines, and generally (not always) they have been marginally or no better than the same car with a V8. I'm talking 7 series, Jaguar/ Daimler XJ (particularly these). I struggle to justify the extra €1000+ in servicing on a Daimler Double 6 vs a Daimler V8.

Drove a 2003 760i a while back, it pulled hard. Very hard. Made my 2005 740Li feel a little wheezy when under full throttle when I climbed back into it.

That being said, it seems a little silly for short commute use to have such a large capacity engine just burning away for the sake out it. If you've a fair aul commute daily at motorway speeds, V12s are justifiable. Bit of a waste otherwise; the fuel consumption is horrendous.

Funny, was recently thinking how that car is getting on in its new surrounds...

I'm confused as to why you feel the need to bring in a posters personal financial situation into another thread? Can you not just drop it and discuss the actual topic which the joy of a V12..?

To the poster who questions the V12 over the V8, drive one. The 750 sounded like a spitfire on startup, incredibly refinded.

One thing that I couldn't believe about the above 760 was the heat coming from under the car! I'm used to hearing the crackling heat shields when you switch off, but you could toast some bread by the front doors with the heat being pumped out from underneath, unbelievable. Any of you guys experience similar?

(then again we were fairly haulin ass for 20 minutes before hand :D )

Yeah mine was like that too, enormous heat as you got out, lovely little leg warmer in the winter....:D

How's your 7 Series going actually? Did you get the suspension done for the test or am I way off?

Yeh replaced the arms/ball joints, got her through the NCT. Issue now with fuel not balancing properly between both sides of the tank, but that's for another thread!

I don't understand why people think I eat gruel in order to maintain my car.
I spend a lot on it that's true, but then what should I spend my money on? Fags? Alcohol? Drugs?

The only reason I cannot keep that car anymore (even though I'd love to) is that someone important is in my life, and I love them more than my car :)

@voodoo - even the v8's generate loads of heat, my e38 sounds like somebodys playing a steel drum concert when i turn it off after a bit of rev happy driving.

i myself here have had a whole host and range of v12 engined motors but i first started off with the one which i loved most dearly and fondly my e32 750i highline :) it had such class and refinement and a certain air around it that my whole family loved every minute of our ownership

Ah but the V12 was something else. Even my 728 cracked and popped for 60 seconds after turning it off, the actual heat coming off the bottom of the 760 was ferocious, you could feel it through your jeans!

I've never listed after a V12, not a big Merc or BMW anyway.
I've been in the aforementioned big black 750i and while it was lovely, I found it quite underwhelming.

Honestly, if I'm in something with 5.4 litres and 12 cylinders, I'd like to at least be tricked into thinking I'm moving quickly, or I don't know, be able to head the engine? :pac:

I'd honestly much rather and engine half the size, in a car the quarter the size. More balance, more noise and more speed please.
But hey, I'm just a young hoon. :p

If I was going to have a V12 it would want to be something like an F12 or an FF, otherwise I'll take a Supra or a RB26 GTR.
Just one side but with two turbos.

The vast majority of S-Class Mercs in Ireland are the impossibly tedious S320 CDI, which runs on the wrong fuel and has half the correct number of cylinders. Now let us never speak of it again. :)

The Great One on probably the last commercially-produced V12. Featuring Brian Eno's mesmerising "The Ending" on soundtrack. Nice piece of cinema, I thought, and a bit sad. :(

    +100

I thought that was a wonderful piece. It actually was the catalyst for me wanting a V12. I just decided I needed one at some stage in life, so I did. :)
