I wouldn't normally recommend the company, and I personally feel that their service is lacking, but Register365 are offering a .uk domain for 1c.

Yep, 1c. So, it might be worth a punt for a laugh.
However, if you're looking for something decent, look elsewhere.

Where the registrant is overseas an additional address for service in the UK will be required*

If a .uk domain name shows as "reserved" online, that indicates that the domain name is reserved for upto 5 years and can only be registered by the individual / business that has the 'right of registration'.
If a domain name shows as 'available' online, that particular domain name is available for registration on a first come, first served basis.

*A UK address for service is intended to be an address that is given to deliver legal documents, we will supply this service at an additional cost within the cart process to any registrant outside of the UK. Should you have your own UK address, please contact our Domain Administration team to proceed with your order

Your ParcelMotel ID (address) would suffice.

    Is UK better than Co.uk?

There's no better, or worse, but it's just a domain.
If you look at it another way, there'll be a lot more domains since the creation of new suffixes: .music, .irish, .dublin, .whatever.

Either the code has expired or by me un-selecting everything possible to just give the domain the code doesn't seem to work...

Think the code is user specific

I got an email about this from register365 and it was for yesterday only and would appear to have expired so thread should be marked as such.
