Drugs Payment Scheme Card about to expire

    Hi,

My mother's HSE Drugs Payment Scheme Card is going to expire at the end of this month.

Does the HSE automatically issue new cards when existing ones expire (presumably in advanced before they do)?

She's certain this was the case when she got her first card a long time ago and is quite worried that she hasn't gotten a replacement in the post yet.

Does anyone know what is suppose to happen? (I'm not a user of the scheme myself so know very little about it)

    Thanks.

Mine is replaced just before it expires, so I think your mother is right. If you are worried phone the local HSE office to make sure the card is in the post.

As far as I can tell, having worked in various different parts of the country, some local health offices send them out automatically, some send them out if you phone and ask them to, and some insist on a whole new application form being filled in.

Ring the local health office and ask them.

Mind you, it doesn't really matter if it does expire; it's not means tested like a Medical Card. Your entitlement to the benefits of the scheme doesn't vanish when your card expires. The pharmacy will still be paid for providing your mother's meds.

In my area the HSE sends out a reminder. (Quite often the patient does not receive this reminder)If you have not yet received a reminder then you should get on to the local HSE office ASAP.(you should also apply for a DPS card yourself. It only costs a stamp and you never know when you might need it)

    Hi,

    Thanks for the replies.

I made the call and within 5 minutes had an updated card on the way.:)
