    hi folks,,
does any one on here have cars fitted with hand controls as i have a few questions....

    1- are they usually automatics?

2-are they dual control as in can I and my spouse who needs hand controls are both able to use the car?

3- guess i can answer question 1 in that clutch control might not be possible

4- are grants available to buy a car already adapted second hand or new?

am sure the disabled drivers ass can help me but i am doing this on here as wife is slowly coming to terms and i have to use the softly softly approach on this matter..

    thanks for any thoughts

    Roy

    1 yes they're usually automatic

2 yes you can drive them as normal too

3 you used to be able to buy a system that had a button on the gearknob that would dip the clutch, they weren't very good and not really sold anymore. Automatics are much more widely available nowadays

4 yes, you can claim vrt and vat back. It doesn't need to be a new car.

Talk to Jonny in motability Ireland. They're expensive but very helpful.

The key is getting a primary medical cert.

It used to be better years ago when vrt on decent sized cars was quite high. It meant you could claim more money back, and the car wouldn't depreciate as much vs your purchase price in 2 years time.
It's still possible to make the system work in your favour, but you need to choose your car wisely if you want to change for small money next time.

    thanks colm,

is it your doctor who can recommend you for primary cert or a different board?

No. You need to go directly to your local health board and get an application for a PMC. You then send it to their senior medical officer.
