Is West Dublin as referred to in the media meant to be Finglas or South Dublin? The news keeps mentioning the West of Dublin in relation to the violent murder that took place this morning. Not sure if they are talking about the Finglas area or if it is outside that boundary.

I wouldn't have though finglas was west dublin. Blanch down past the Liffey on both sides is west Dublin. (Not as far as Lucan).

There's no definitive dividing line but I've never heard Finglas being included in 'west Dublin' - usually it would be Blanchardstown onwards.

As a rule of thumb, I'd say anything west of Island Bridge could (arguably) be considered West Dublin... though others might go further still - perhaps anything past the Castleknock Gate of the Phoenix Park.

I'm fairly sure the story the OP is referring to was relating to Palmerstown - it's also commonly used for Blanchardstown and particularly Mulhuddart.
