Attic Conversion and IS444 Span Tables.

    Hi.

    I am planning an attic conversion and one thing that concerns me is that not one of the six specs I have got have timbers per the IS444 span tables, some are working from UK span tables but all have come back with timbers of 7x2 or 9x2 C16 for a span which per IS444 would be 9x3 C24.

    At this stage I am planning on getting a structural engineer to design the attic and timbers etc. Is this common ? or am I missing something re the timbers sizes.

    1st off we can't comment on structural items in this forum, as its against the charter

    Correct me if I'm wrong:
    What you seem to have gotten are prices for doing the job. Unless the builders have offered you a design service?
    A structural engineer is a good idea.

    Hi.

    Yes I know structural discussions are not allowed and I'd like to clarify I'm not asking that anyone provide any structural information. What I've got is a quote which included spec including timber sizes and strengths. The design is known but the concern is that none are actually adhering to IS444. I would have taught this was mandatory per say and I suppose that is my question really.

    I would have taught from one perspective this was a foundation that you build upon. Each of the quotes are from attic conversion companies that state they have an engineer who provides the spec.

    Thanks all.

    Going to engage an structural engineer and get it quotes from that. I'd rather not wake up under the roof one morning if at all.

    im assuming your talking about purlins and the strut locations.

    youd be right to question the spec, and youd be right to get a structural engineer in at this stage.

    Yes, thanks, all details really, the floor span is being pushed to the max and given that none have adhered to IS444 for the span then I'm questioning the rest of the timbers. Engineer it is. Thanks
