Import Duties Question

I purchased a number of Blu-rays from an American seller through amazon.co.uk. The package was delivered by FedEx. I received a bill for €75.39 from FedEx today. Having ordered many items from the seller in question over recent years, I had never experienced such an issue before.

Amazon's official policy on Customs is stated here:

For merchandise dispatched from outside the European Union (EU) to an EU country, the seller is responsible for customs duties, import VAT or other fees. In line with the Participation Agreement, the price of any item sold should be inclusive of any customs, import, export, VAT and excise duty.

I contacted Amazon's customer service and was assured that I am not expected to pay the duties. I'm now awaiting a response from the seller.

I would have expected to pay duties if ordering direct from amazon.com - I have prior experience of that.

I would appreciate feedback from anyone who is aware of my rights with this issue. While it seems that Amazon's policy might favour me, I have my doubts.

Looking at the Policy you mention does look like seller should be paying for those charges.

But from previous experiences on stuff I purchased from outside the EU it's always the buyer who is responsible for paying those customs charges (it was never purchase from Amazon) I know recently ebay in some items when seller is from outside the EU it does show the import charges you will need to pay and you pay that when you pay for the item.

Yes, I was charged before when ordering from amazon.com - I almost expected that, but I was never charged when buying through amazon.co.uk.

If amazon policy is that seller should pay for it, I will show that to seller, you could say that you wouldn't had ordered if you knew you had to pay it, even get Amazon to talk directly to seller about it if seller doesn't want to agree with it.

Cheers for the replies. Amazon have contacted the seller; they have made their policy very clear. I've been quite impressed by the support I've received from them but the issue is far from settled.
