I recommend arguscarhire; they'll scan all the rental companies and give you a choice of quotes.

No connection other than as a satisfied customer.

As with most products and services, the 'Best' and 'Cheapest' seldom go together. With car rental, the cheapest usually involves some hidden charges or you get stung on the fuel or (worst case) they claim you damaged the car and they whack your credit card with a big charge a week later.

Make sure he books on the European site so it includes CDW and the minimum insurance.

Unless of course his credit card covers this, but if it doesn't then book through the Euro Site, otherwise they will cream you for mandatory insurance when you turn up to get the car.

This is why the quotes on the U.S. sites look so much cheaper.

    http://www.autoeurope.ie, http://www.arguscarhire.ie or http://www.rentalcars.com/ie/ are all fine.

you should also look at city depots and not just the airport ones.
Enterprise have a depot beside croke park (Russel st) and it can be substantially cheaper than renting from Dublin airport.
Same in cork, but there the airport depot doubles as the city depot!
The few euro on a taxi can pay for itsself comfortably.

Also, all companies at Dublin airport are now operating out near the long term car park so you will have to travel somewhere to collect the car anyhow.
The one negative may be depot opening hours, so after 6pm you'd want to check if a city location is still opened.

I like Expedia for this. When I use the Australia site it's always cheaper than .ie. Worth checking out.

I would not recommend this approach for someone used to LHD :D
