Have about 5 acres that had strong whins on them and thistles, got the whins pulled with a digger in the backend and reseeded it anywhere that seed was needed.Seed took well and it has been grazed now by sheep.Thistles beginning to appear again....and only matter of time till Whins start to as well.

Intend spraying it soon to kill whins below ground before they re-establish.Is Grazon 90 the best product for it?....heard it was.
Might tackle the thistles as well,or next year. Whats most effective Thistle killer, would be the tall type thistles.

Don't mind spraying for a few yrs in a row if needs be to do a right job on sickening the whins.
Any replies from people who have tackled them successfully appreciated.

Grazon 90's yer only man for whins and briars, i use thistlex on the spear thistles and it appears to do a good job. I'm two years into a 5 acre field that was full of whins, pulled them all out by root with the digger, some deep roots were left and some new whins appeared last year. I did them with the quad and lance spot spraying and nothing has bloomed this year, but i'm keeping a tight eye to it just in case. Have another couple acres needs tackled now that was done about 8 years ago and only pulled the whins and never resprayed and they're back as bad as ever.

Went spot spraying with grazon pro there the last few weeks mighty stuff nettles briars and docks I was a little disappointed with what it did with some thistles though, but to be fair maybe that's down to me I don't know? Expensive stuff though!

Thanks....sounds like the Grazon 90 is one to go with, have used it on briars to good effect,I wonder should I wait till whins start to appear above ground before spraying?....a local fella that's reasonably knowledgeable reckons I could just blanket spray the ground now and that would seep into remaining whin roots.

Is there any point spraying mature whins or is it a waste of time?

I don't think spraying the ground will work.
I'd be waiting till there is fresh regrowth and spray that.

It'll kill them but it wouldn't be my choice, you'll be left with a lot of standing dead stuff, to do what with? Either pull them out, or cut them and paint the stumps. Mulching could be another option.

Gallop isn't a great idea for thistles in grassland, unless you want to kill grass'n all
Why are you not using MCPA.....cheap and cheerful.

mix grazon and thistlex 2/3 to 1/3 and spray, it will bury everything in site

Thistlex is the only job for thistles, kill them dead the first time.

This depends what type of ground, though i have places id not have the depth to root them and would take months to cut. i find if you spray and put cattle im threw them when there good and dead they break up the standing dead and your flying again.
