Asking for pay rise, IT?

    Just looking for some advice here.

    Without giving too much away, I work in fairly specialised application support in an IT department. Started 1 year ago. I do a lot of related small application development around this also. I'm thinking of asking for a pay raise, but is it a bad idea? Even though I've been here a year, I was on a secondment and only got my full time contract a couple months ago. I'm not too happy with my current salary (30k) and annual leave (basic 20 days). I had asked was there scope for an increase when I got the contract, but was told, in so many words, that I was lucky to have it and ask again next year.

    I'm not denying I'm lucky to get the break I needed in IT, but I feel after a year I should really get an increase? My manager is very happy with my performance, I've scored highly on the performance reviews, and I do a lot of specialised work around app development and a few other things for them, not just support. I've been told by a few people I'm underpaid for what I do, and just recently I've been asked by recruiters to go forward for similar positions at 40-45k. In fact I've a phone interview soon.

    Given the fact it's so soon since I got the contract...is it even worth asking??

    Well what I do is fairly specialised and experienced staff (even if only a year) are hard to come by. But even 40k is a better wage for me.

    In general what you are paid is a combination of factors. Among them what value you bring and what it would cost on the open market for the job to be done. Thus if asking for a rise, show documented proof of both what you have done and salary survey for that specific role.
    As OP is only there for a relatively short time, it might not be successful as HR/etc are conservative in the increase of salaries at the best of time (domino effect) but it will be experience and some form of increase might occur.

    You are not going to get a 25-30 percent pay rise unless you move companies imo

    Definitely agree with the above. It's extremely difficult to get that kind of raise, you'd need to be crucial to the place and threatening to leave basically.

    If you are being offered interviews from other companies, I'd take a look at some of them, it makes your negotiation strategy a hell of a lot stronger if you're willing to walk if you don't get what you want
