Is an egr valve the type of part that you should not buy second hand or is it okay and normal to do so instead of buying a new one ?

I suppose you can buy a reconditioned one from a good place, or have them recon your own for you.
    What car/year is it for?
Are you sure you need to get it swapped rather than just cleaning it yourself?

1.8 petrol mondeo, yeah at this stage, it's been cleaned already and still getting eml light for it.

I guess if you're getting it for next to nothing from the scrappy then it's worth a punt.

If buying off someone who could have had a problem with his though, you would be taking more of a risk.
