Does the odometer need to work for the NCT?

The odometer on my car has stopped working- it's just completely blank and displays nothing at all. Will this pass the NCT?

In the NCT manual (p5) it says "The NCT tester must record the odometer reading at the time of the test where an odometer is fitted."

If I have the odometer out of the vehicle (I'm trying to fix it at the moment) or if it is simply blank is that acceptable to pass? It doesn't seem to say you need a working odometer anywhere in the manual just that the tester must list the milage if it's there.

I appreciate that if it displayed the wrong mileage that would be inappropriate as they would get a false reading, but what about just no reading at all? I want to get it fixed but won't be able to get parts until after the test and it only recently stopped working. Thanks!

Not sure, will be interesting to know. I'd imagine they will just put a N/A on the report/disc and it will pass.

Possibly a visual fail but they will test everything else. Take it in anyway and see if it fails on anything else too.

If you're driving the car with the odometer removed, are you not in danger of falling foul of the new anti clocking rules? Surely bringing it for an NCT in that condition would provide evidence or an opportunity for an overeager NCT tester to report you?

Nah, there is a difference between wilfully changing the clock and it simply not displaying.

may be anecdotal evidence, but had a 206 few years back that passed the NCT with no questions asked - the odometer wasn't displaying anything

He's stated that he has removed it to try to fix it.

My car passes each year, it's 15 years old , the odometer has not displayed properly in about four years.

Mine to, last half a dozen NCT's has read 999999, they ask if you have any idea of the true mileage but I just say no

EDIT isn't the odometer normally part of the speedometer, can you remove it from the OPs car without the speedometer being affected?

Thanks everyone for your experience so far. I haven't got the odometer fixed yet- most of the time it's just displaying a garbled messaged on the LCD screen and as mentioned I won't be able to get a spare before the NCT. I wonder is it better to send it in with it garbled or just unplugged so its blank altogether - any thoughts?

I'd go garbled, if it's fitted it must be working so turning it off could be an issue.
